anyone else on iron supplements with folic acid and vit C ?

I have not spoken to my doctor - for legitimate reasons, no one's fault, and my bood work post sx is in my hospital file -and apparnetly not available to the office- do you think I am being a pest if i call and tell his office I want to know why I am on iron, and don't want to wait 3 weeks to find out - that I want him to call me from medical records in the hospital or pull up mylabs on a hospital computer - his PA that spoke to me gave me my pre-sx bloodwork &said it was fine - ((and my MD told me after sx that I bled even less than he expected (which was very little to begin with)...so why the iron? she said "just take it for now and ask him when you come in " - but that is 3 weeks away - can you sisters seee me waiting that long ??? my sister and family totally don't get my need to know...

Lynda,
I don't think it's unreasonable to ask to speak with your gyn about why he has you taking an iron supplement. You also mentioned folic acid and vitamin C ... did he suggest those too?

From personal experience, I started taking a multi-vitamin after surgery after consulting with my gyn. I had some blood work done at six weeks post op and my gyn called me later to tell me I needed to take a folic acid supplement because I have some sort of protein deficiency that is a risk factor for heart disease. Apparently the folic acid can help with this.

Every doctor is different ... sometimes I ask to talk to a nurse first, ask my question, then if they can't answer they have my gyn call me back. He's really good about this ... but I know not all docs are. Let us know what you find out.

I took iron supplements (Slow Fe) with Vitamin C before my surgery. First because I banked two units of my own blood, and second because my doctor wanted my blood levels to be as high as possible.

Many women are anemic or have low levels from bleeding or overly long periods. It's possible that your doctor puts all his/her patients on supplements before surgery. But after? I don't know.

That said, I can't see any reason why you can't get your doctor on the phone. Iron can be constipating, and the last thing we need post-op is to be constipated. I'd insist on speaking to the doctor. Your complete file should be in your own doctor's hands by now.

Please let us know what you find out.

Hi there,
I just wanted to let you know that my doctor puts all his surgery patients on iron one month before surgery. It is on our pre-op paper and they said it also helps, I believe they said, build the red blood cells before surgery. They said it is good to take a good multiple before surgery as well as no aspirin one week prior to surgery.

I also read that B6 helps the nausea from the anesthesia. In a vitamin book by Adelle Davis, she said put B6 in a cold cream and rub it on the upper belly area (not on incision) and it is fantastic to alleviate the nausea.

I will be trying this out on April 15 and I will let yous know. How fantastic if this would help make things a little easier for that after those first few days.

Take care, Kathy
