have a slight cold - HEEEEELP

Dear Sisters,
I am scheduled for surgery on Fri. 22. I have taken the day off work today because I have developed a slight cold. I am at home drinking heaps of water, taking echnacea and garlic (never been into 'herbs & spices' before) and trying to rest and not panic.

I never usually get colds, I put it down to the fact that I have been flat out preparing for my visit to the castle.

Have read the posts by the sisters on sore throats, however, that dear sister had 10 days to recover.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? Was surgery cancelled? I am really nervous as it will muck up all my plans, work has had to employ a contract teacher to replace me while I'm gone.

I'm trying to be positive, I do have to go to work tomorrow to deliver the exam paper that I have to finsh today. Otherwise I will be resting as much as possible.

Diana,

I am sorry you aren't feeling up to par, and hope it gets better for you soon. Call and ask your doc about the cold. If s/he cancels, they would do it for good reasons. No doc wants to do surgery if someone is ill. Please call soon and let us know what s/he says. Most docs will go ahead with surgery as long as the lungs are clear and there isn't a fever present.

Ya know what... I don't know how your doc feels about this, but the echnacea and garlic should NOT be used this close to surgery. If you want to check out that thread, please click on the 1st post on the beginning of the board. I would check with your doctor, as some are different. Seeing as how your surgery is scheduled for the 22nd, and you are taking the echnacea and garlic this close to surgery, you *might* of already placed yourself in the position to have it postponed. I am not a doc, so can't tell you for sure. Best to check with yours. Either way, best of luck to you. Take care.

Hi Diana!

I'm so sorry about your cold, and I sure do hope it goes away and you are feeling much better for your surgery.

I agree with Amy; DRs and anesthesiologists are very particular about what you can and cannot have in your system prior to surgery. Please give them a call to make sure you're following the right path; perhaps they can also offer alternative medication, as echinacea and garlic are typically on the list of things not to take.

Best wishes; please let us know how it goes for you!

I just wanted to agree with what the other ladies have said about the herbs. Echinacea and Garlic are on the list that I was given to not take before surgery. They said that garlic could increase bleeding, and echinacea may cause inflamation of the liver if combined with certain other medications. Please let your doctor know what you have been taking. I know I would have never thought to avoid these things if they didn't give me a list. I hope that you will be feeling better soon and will still have everything go as planned, as long as it is safe for you Take care and best wishes

Thankyou once again dear sisters,
I have just had a snooze for three hours and feel a lot better, still a bit sniffly but I don't think it'll develop any further. Part of it could have been my body telling me to slow down a bit.

I really appreciate the advice about the herbs - have stopped taking them. I feel a bit of a goose not reading the info at the top of the forum before I went to the chemist last night.

I did tell the assistant that I would be having surgery on Fri. she should have told me not to take the stuff!! :confuse:

Anyway the doc seems to think it's OK, I have only had three doses.

I'm sooooooo grateful for this site.
