progesterone makes me crazy and feel awful

Hi, I had my hysterectomy with and ovaries removed 3 years ago. I have been using the vivele dot .05 for ERT and this keeps hot flashes and mood swings away but I had a dr recommend natural progesterone , first we tried cream than pills from the compounding pharmacy as low as 25mg a day even dropped to every other day. So with progesterone my whole body hurts , hips legs , arms chest and I feel bloated and tired. This suprises me because I read on here that everyone loves progesterone. I would like to know if there are other women who can not tolerate progesterone ?...

Re: progesterone makes me crazy and feel awful

I feel much better on progesterone, but you'll see there are plenty of women who do not tolerate it well and feel worse when they use it. It is interesting how we are all so different when it comes to HRT.

I'm one of those women who has never tolerated progesterone. Happiest on just estrogen. Was there are reason your dr wanted you to try the progesterone?

Re: progesterone makes me crazy and feel awful

I am one who has never liked progesterone. Tried it twice--very briefly both times--did not like the way it made me feel. Very happy on estradiol only.

Re: progesterone makes me crazy and feel awful

I couldn't even take a small amount of progesterone without feeling horrible. It was one thing I was glad to no longer be forced to take when I had my hyster.

Re: progesterone makes me crazy and feel awful

Thanks, everything I find when I search or google seems to indicate there are not any bad side effects with natural bio identical progesterone, so I was concerned that it was just me. I believe even Dr Lee says there are no know bad side effects. But I wanted to start a thread for women to let them know that progesterone is not for everyone and can have the opposite affect on some women. I can not believe how much better i feel better after just 3 weeks with out it.

In response to the question as to why I took it, The hormone specialist I went to said it was dangerous to use estrogen alone and that it would help me fall sleep better. I spent the last year going crazy thanks to her. I thought I was getting some sort of chronic pain condition and I gain 25 pounds which I have lost 5 so far in just 3 weeks.

Re: progesterone makes me crazy and feel awful

Interesting specialist you have. It is dangerous to use estrogen alone IF you still have a uterus. Those of us who have had endo are often prescribed progesterone to hopefully help keep the endo at bay, but otherwise I don't see how it could be dangerous not to use progesterone.

Like Elsie said, interesting specialist
Yes, the last time I was on Progesterone I gained 10kgs in 10 weeks. Not good. My gynae said "you must be one of those women who's sensitive to even the tiniest amount of progesterone" so I figured there had to be others.

Re: progesterone makes me crazy and feel awful

Marie,
I think it may be time for a 2nd opinion. I think your doctor is confusing natural menopause with surgical menopause. You may or or may not need progesterone after the uterus is removed. It is only dangerous to not use progesterone if you are using estrogen when you still have a uterus.

Re: progesterone makes me crazy and feel awful

Thanks for sharing everyone, I am feeling better and better as the progesterone leaves my system, and I have an appointment with a new doctor in a few weeks.
