bowel prep for TAH

Ok...I know I will find out the ugly truth tomorrow at pre-op, but what is the standard bowel prep for a TAH. You see, mine is scheduled for Monday...and I am looking at all the delicious Easter brunch menus and wondering if it will be worth it for me to fix eggs benedict on Sunday morn...you know, kind of a last supper!

bowel prep for TAH

Hi, Caroline -

Had to laugh at your "last supper" comment.

There is no standard bowel prep - some docs do them, some don't. Some have you use an enema, some have you drink the fleet laxative stuff.

My doc said he normally doesn't do bowel preps for hysts, but did for me because there was a possibility of cancer, and he wanted them to be able to do work on my bowels if they needed to.

I had to drank the fleet stuff (once at night Saturday after my "last supper"), once on Sunday morning. I was on liquids all day Sunday, had surgery Monday am.

In some ways, it was a good thing, cause it cleaned out my system.

No bowel prep here

Caroline

I was in hospital 1 day pre op and I asked the dr if I had to do bowel prep. He gave me the choice. He had no preference. Guess what I chose? No thanks. No drinking yucky fluids, no nothing.

Regards and best wishes for your surgery.

As others say it's an individual preference for each doc. I had to do a fleets the night before but no dietary restrictions, she told me that she found that it minimised gas pains post op.
All the best with your surgery, the anticipation is theworst part.

I did the Fleet. It wasnt bad at all. I took my own stool softners to the hospital and started taking them the day after surgery. In a few days I went to the bathroom with no problemo. You dont want to have to strain with that incision if you can help it. After that, I went on my own. Alot for the first few weeks, but it settled down soon after.
