Found out today about Hysterectomy

2 months ago I started bleeding heavily (my period was due in 2 weeks). I had no pain, except that I continued to bleed heavily with much clotting. After 15 days of this, I saw my dr and he said to wait until the bleeding stopped & come back for a pap smear. By the end of the week, I was almost passing out at work. My face was pale, my breathing laboured, I was dizzy and the bleeding continued. I drove myself to the hospital. I was diagnosed with very low blood pressure and a blood count of 101 (normal is about 120). I had a lot of blood tests done, a pelvic exam and was put on Estrogen pills right away. The hospital even scheduled an ultrasound which showed a cyst on my right side ovary. I had a cyst on the same side 13 years ago when I was pregnant with my only child. I underwent a Laparoscopy and they aspirated the cyst.

When I saw my dr. he quickly prescribed iron pills (300 mg three times a day). Since then, my health has continued to go downhill. I finally got an appointment to see a Gynaecologist. He told me that I have 2 problems - the 3.56 cm x 2.50 cyst on the ovary and the bleeding which is coming from the uterus. He said that the bleeding is definitely coming from the uterus but he does not know why the uterus is bleeding. The Gynaecologist shocked me when he said he recommends taking the cyst & ovary out and also a hysterectolmy. Today, my blood count is slipping even lower from 101 to 82. The Gynaecologist suggests scheduling surgery asap before I require a blood transfusion.

Has anyone ever experienced bleeding from the uterus and what can the causes be? It's difficult for me to believe that a professional could not tell me what is causing my uterus to bleed. I have always had short, lighter periods. Is a hysterectomy the only way to stop the bleeding? I would like to get a second opinion but time is against me. It may take a while to get into to see another specialist and I am losing way too much blood. Please advise your suggestions. Thank you, RosieG

Found out today about Hysterectomy

Hi Rosie,

I am sorry you have been told you have to have a hysterectomy. Have you considered going to a women's hospital in your area.....the outpatients part, and seeing a doctor there? Or, maybe even your GP, who ought to jump up and down at a specialist on your behalf, to squeeze you in to get a second opinion. Mine has done this in the past. They listen to other doctors! A professional explaining your situation ought to get you an appointment earlier.

Did you have an ultrasound? It just seems odd that the doctor does not know the cause of the bleeding.

Wishing you the best, and make sure that you rest up.

Love and light,

I would try to get a second opinion if it is at all possible, but don't jeopardize your health by waiting too long.

A couple of possible causes for the continous bleeding can be fibroids, often they can be felt during a pelvic exam; or polyps. I had fibroids that were first discovered about 3 1/2 years ago, and I also had polyps on my cervix a couple of times.

Occasionally your hormones can get messed up and your uterus is kind of in all phases at once, it gets confused and just keeps bleeding.

Good luck

Hi Rosie

I'm sorry you have gone through so much.
There can be many causes for this heavy bleeding which have already been mentioned. I am sorry your doctor did not check your blood count immediately and put you on Iron right away.
The exams, ultrasounds and a uterine biopsy (have you had one?) should narrow down the problem. More importantly you deserve to have confidence that the procedures they want to do and what they want to take out is purposeful.
Sometimes they can take the cysts off of a healthy ovary. If the ovary is healthy it is beneficial to you and worth keeping.
I too would like to see you get a second opinon. To me a blood transfusion seems worth it, if it will buy you time. Blood transfusions are 99% safe today. The hysterectomy and what is removed will be with you for the rest of your life. They can't put anything back.
This is your body so please make sure you and all the doctor's are taking all the necessary steps to insure your long term health.
Good luck and let us know how it works out.

I would definitely get a second opinion right away, especially losing blood like you are.

Normally OB/Gyn, if something is wrong it shouldn't matter to them if your bleeding or not to check you especially in this situation, that is your job, you are losing way to much blood.

Please don't wait..nothing to mess around with

Like you I was bleeding extemely heavy.Getting dizzy, shortness of breath ..I ended up losing so much blood ,my heart rate went way to high because it was trying extra hard to get the blood I had left in me to get in there & do it's job.I was 29yrs at the time & if my heart rate would of gotten any higher I would of had a heart attack.I couldn't even think straight because of all the oxygen I was losing.I had to have a transfusion,2 pints of red packed blood cells & 2 pints of fresh frozen plasma. But this happened because I had to take a blood thinner ,I was suppose to have 2 mg of coumadin,he gave me 10 mg & never followed me up with blood work.Big screw up on his part.I don't want to scare you ...but call you doctor.I know from first hand experience when we lose to much blood can really lose your senses.I know I did .Please let us know how you make out !
