I am scheduled for TAH on 5/14. High school graduation is 5/24. Do you think I will be able to go with lots of help? Amazing how many questions I can think of!!!

Hi Ktr,

Much as I hate to tell you this, I don't think you'll be ready for such an outing only ten days following your surgery. Granted, we all recover at different rates, but it seems to me like too much, too soon. Since it would entail a car ride, and what I'm guessing would be prolonged sitting in an upright chair, speaking from my experience I don't think you should plan on it. At that point, what you really need to be doing is resting and taking short walks.

It's been three weeks since my surgery and I've had what I think to be a really smooth recovery so far. Even as well as I've done, though, thinking back to how I was at ten days post-op I know I wouldn't have been ready...

Best wishes to you!

Hi, Ktr,

I wouldn't have enjoyed a high school graduation at ten days post-op. For one thing, just riding in the car was painful, at that point. Sitting upright for longer than about twenty minutes was painful, too.

Because we're all different, I'd suggest that you wait and see how you're feeling at ten days post-op. If you feel well, go ahead. If not, ask someone to take lots of photos for you, or send a videocamera.

Good luck with your surgery.

Best wishes,
Helen

Hi KTR

I think I had a really good and fast recovery and yet at 10 days that would have been too much for me. I was able to go to a family reunion at 14 days though for a few hours. It was amazing to me how each day brought a noticable increase in comfort, healing and energy.
You will need to monitor how you are feeling at day 10. But I wouldn't get your hopes up to high. The car ride and sitting (remember sitting is an activity) can really wipe you out.
Really taking it easy those first few weeks is so important to your overall recovery. Ultimately it is worth it though.
Good luck.

Hi Ktr,

I'm sorry to say this also but I don't think you should plan on going. At ten days, riding in the car was very uncomfortable for me. When I made a 30 mile trip at day 12 I really regretted it. Unless school is very close to home and someone can whisk you home the minute you get uncomfortable from sitting, I'd say don't do it.
