cervix or not

hi again. Thanks for all your responses. Mighty helpful. What do you gals think of taking the cervix with TAH/BSO. No previous history with cervix. Thinking of leaving it. Any experianced princesses out there that can help?

cervix or not

TAH means total which includes the cervix.

This is a decision everyone has to make for themselves, unless you are having a vaginal hyst, then the cervix has to go. This is the way my DR explained it to me: the cervix is not a separate organ, it is part of the uterus, basically just the opening to the uterus. Once the uterus is gone it no longer has a function. It is about the size of a coat button. It serves no function in supporting other organs. During surgery the vagina is attached to other structures in the abdomen. Keeping the cervix there is still a risk for cervical cancer, and if you keep one or both ovaries there is also a chance of “mini periods”. The bladder has its own ligaments for support.

I am 9 weeks post op and haven't missed it.

I kept my cervix. My surgeon explained that keeping it can reduce the risk of prolapse later on and you, but you will have to continue having cervical smears. This is purely your decision. You should discuss the pros and cons with your surgeon.

Best of luck with your decision.

I am keeping it

My doc said it is staying. I am having an abdominal on May 17. He is taking uterus, and lots of fibroids, but leaving the ovaries and cervix. He said the cervix helps support other things. He did tell me that since some uterine lining could extend into the cervix, that he cuts a small wedge to make sure that it gets all the uterine lining. Anyway, just another opinion!! Good Luck!

I am having a SAH/BSO, everything is going except my cervix. I have read quite a bit and the views are about 50/50. I have always had clear pap test so I am a candidate to keep mine. My doctor also told me that keeping it helps prevent prolapse later. It is your choice, if you do keep one or both ovaries you may have mini periods, and of course you will still need a yearly pap.

Good luck
