Menopause - now or never

I am so confused and I'm definitely missing something here. I guess no question is dumb so here goes --

I am having a TAH/BSO on Monday, April 15 - yes that's 4 days away and I am now rather calm, but that's another story.

If they are removing everything, am I going to have to go through the menopause symptoms? I guess I thought once it was all gone, I didn't have to worry about that. Some of the comments here have some people on HRT, some are not....

If I do go on HRT will I have to be on it forever? How do they determine when you stop taking?

Sorry for so many questions, but I've been thinking about this for a couple of days and want to sound somewhat intelligent when I talk to the doctor on Monday.

Thanks,

Menopause - now or never

Yes, if they take all, you will go into menopause. Your body will be without hormone suddenly. But your doctor will put you on hormones afterwards if not before surgery. Because he is taking everything he will give you total replacement. You may have a few symtoms but he will make adjustments to find you a good level. (hormone therapy) The girls here have wonderful info of what works well for them. You may take hormones until a few years past normal menopause age. He will ween you off naturally like Mother Nature tries to. Why hasn't he talked to you about this? Check out the Hormone Jungle here on site.

No question in dumb! Keep asking, Keep reading.

Best wishes for a great surgery and recovery.

Maralyn is right, you will go immediately into menopause. I was put on HRT right away in the hospital and only experienced one night of sweats. But whether or not they put you on HRT depends on why you are having surgery. If you have endo, they may not want to. Or if you have certain risks for cancers, they may not. Talk to your doctor to understand what will happen.
