Overweight stomach

Hi there,

I am quite a bit overweight but not enormous and have to be cut downwards from the navel to remove a very large fibroid (16 pounds in weight) I wondered if anyone could give me advice about how the wound heals with having flab and how difficult it is to start to move and get used to bending again. Also, is there more pain? I am due to have my op next Tuesday, April 23 and am getting very nervous.
Thank you for this wonerful site

Overweight stomach

Everyone heals different, but I had a verticle incision with no problem. My stomach hung over in my bikini area. I call donelaps disease. I had trouble with skin rubbing and had a drain in that area since I had an appendectomy at the same time. It took a little longer to heal. You just make sure you keep it dry. As for the large stomach I don't think mine hindered healing or moving. The more you move around the faster you heal. Just don't over do it. My prayers will be with you on your surgery day and for a fast recovery. I have never felt better!

I agree with Autore3. I'm also overweight (lots to be precise). I haven't had any trouble with healing/moving around.

I now feel better than I have done for ages (3 1/2 weeks post op) and hae taken up walkoing on a daily basis. Maybe this is the life changing experience that I needed to get my body back into shape (hasn't had any shape for over 10 years now!). I have been blessed with a body that seems to heal really well - fat but fit, so I figure that I should look after it a bit better.

You will read lots of posts referring to 'swelly belly', I for one have experienced the opposite since my large uterus was removed! I knew it wasn't all flab.

Good luck with the surgery, let us know how you get on.

She's right

Autore3 is right. The key is keeping your incision dry and moving around. I didn't have a vertical incision, I had a "bikini cut". Can you imagine a big woman with "donelaps disease" and a bikini cut?!? I'm still having troubles with my incision. My DR said it would be sensitive for a while. Anytime I sweat in that area which is all the time, it itches, hurts or feels weird. Good Luck dear.
