Personal question......about shaving

I had a TVH/BSO 3/20 and my doctor told me she would need me partially shaved so I did it myself the night before. I decided I didn't want someone else who didn't know my nooks and crannies to be doing that, besides the OR and Pre OR rooms are famous for being freezing cold. Plus, by doing it myself I could use anti-itch lotion specially made for shaving near tender areas so after the surgery I didn't have that growing in itch/rash to deal with along with everything else. While we're on the personal side of the pre-op...If your doctor hasn't told you yet, he/she may have you do a bowel clean out. I cuts down the risk of contamination...I had hemorroids after pregnancies and noticed after the results of the clean out --dulcolax/enema etc. that they were coming back. I jumped right in with prep H ointment and wipes to keep things from getting worse.

Personal question......about shaving

Hi Cindy,

I think you should definitely check with your doctor before doing any shaving yourself. I have seen a few messages where others have said that their doctors did not want them to do it themselves.

I have a bikini incision, and just a small amount of hair was shaved. It was done in the operating room, after I was under anesthesia. I think that's how it's often done, when shaving is involved, although not always.

Best wishes to you!

Hi Cindy

I agree with what Abby said. Please let the doctor decide what needs to be done and when.
I also just had a partial shave after I was under the anesthesia.
They will know just what to do for your procedure.
Good luck.

Personal question......about shaving

Yes please check with your doctor before shaving. It has to do with infections, especially if you nick yourself!

I didn't shave and I know they shaved me a little bit after I was under.

Personal question......about shaving

Hi Cindy

Don't worry about being bald, with an abdominal hyst it's just little bit above the pubic bone that is shaved. But it itches when it's growing back!

Personal question......about shaving

As the other ladies have said - Check with the dr about shaving yourself. Some want you shaved, some don't. And the scenario of you nicking yourself and getting an infection is a real concern.

My own experience was that a nurse came in about an hour pre op with a little battery operated shaver. She "trimmed", not fully shaved about 2 inches. The best part of it being a trim was there was none of the itching from a total shave.

Regards and best wishes.

Personal question......about shaving

Like Buckkie, I was shaved by a nurse about a half hour before going into surgery. I was like oh no I'm gonna be in itch city afterwards! I itched the first week, then afterwards I was ok.
