Path Report

I have a question and I haven't seen a thread about it (although I am sure there has been one) so I thought I would ask. When they do a TAH/USO for cysts and endo, will they automatically do a path report or do I have to ask for it? And if they do one.. how long does it take to get the results? I am positive that there won't be anything there.. but I guess not so positive that I don't want to know the results.. (make sense?)

I don't know about where you live, but here at our hospital, they automatically do pathology on all tissue removed. They do it to rule out any possibility of cancer and I'm sure many other things as well. If you're not sure ask your doctor, they would know the procedure. As far as how long it took for results, I have seen posts on here where women had path results by the time they left the castle. I had mine by 3 weeks post, but was told if anything had been wrong they would have called sooner. I hope this helps.

I'm pretty sure all hospitals send removed organs and tissue to the pathology lab. The path report is part of the whole surgical history that is included in your hospital chart.

I had to go to the hospital clinic three weeks after surgery because of a slight complication (pulled muscle), and while I was there I asked to see my path report. It might as well have been written in hieroglyphics for the most part - lots of medical terms and weights and measurements were in the metric system - but it was kind of interesting to look it over. One of the nurses helped me by telling me what the measurements were in terms I could understand.

You usually have to ask for a copy of the report if you want one, I don't think it's given to you unless you want it.

Hope this helps!

Yes, I think it's routine now for all organs and tissues to go to pathology for their analysis. I had to ask for my full report about 4 weeks after the surgery.

It's a very good idea to ask for the path report AND the OR report after ANY surgery...you should have them in your own files. You don't have to request that the reports be done, but you should request copies at your first post-op checkup or you can call the hospital.

My doctor had them in my file already at my one week checkup, and they made the copies for me right there. (each report is less than two pages long). It's very interesting reading...the size, shape, and condition of your "innards" will be there in black & white.
