Neurosurgeon appt on Wed

Just wanted to touch base with my sisters. I haven't been around in a week or so, this stupid back of mine tricked me into thinking it was getting better, but now I've blown another disc!!

I haven't been out of the bed (even using a bedpan..yuck!) since Thursday, and I've been in a lot of pain...I go to the neurosurgeon on Thursday, and from what I've been told he's going to recommend going ahead with the discectomy, and possible fusion. I'm really scared to death here..my dear FIL was paralyzed from back surgery gone bad, and everyone around me is saying "Don't do it". If I could, I would choose to live with this pain, but it has become unbearable, and I can't continue to stay in bed all the time!

Wishing all my friends 's, and I hope you are all doing well..I miss ya'll, and I hope that I'll be able to come and visit with you all soon!

Stacey, ... just wanted to send a and wish you some peace of mind with your decision...I have no experience with back surgery other than a woman that I work with who has had some major surgery and has a lot of "teflon" ?? type material in her back and has to carry a card with her for metal detector purposes and so on....

She told me before she had her surgery, she could only walk a few feet without having to stop and had even started using a walker....this was about 3 years ago...and her life has dramatically changed since then....for her it was a positive step....and hopefully whatever you choose will be the best for you also.....take care of yourself....bj

Thank you for the encouragement BJ! It sounds like hers was more serious than mine, but if she did well that eases my mind...I have seriously considered a walker lately!

I appreciate the hugs and support, and I hope you are doing well!

Take care!

Hi Stacey, I am sorry you are facing this. My father had back surgery in his 70s and did really well. I also have 3 friends who have had the same kind of surgery you are facing and they are doing really well. I know it is better to avoid if at all possible but if you can't then know that it can improve your life greatly. To make you more comfortable, you may want to get a second opinion. s

Hi Stacey: 's
I am so sorry you are having so much pain. A co-worker of mine had back surgery last summer- she was born with spina bifida. And she is doing pretty good although she may eventually need more work done.
It must be a hard decision to make and i pray that you have peace of mind in whatever you decide to do. We are all here for you !

Hi Stacey:

Tried PMing you last week when I read your signature but your mailbox was full. I blew out two discs 10 yrs ago, L5 and S1. It's miserable and you have my sympathy -- that pain is unbearable.

I would have been happy to have someone take a roto-rooter to my lumbar spine, but settled for a laminectomy-diskectomy instead. It's no picnic, but it's do-able, and I'd think techniques have improved.

If I can help with any info, please e-mail me at verlynr@yahoo.com.

I wish you all the very best of luck.

a good friend of mine and her sister both had disk surgery and both were successful...my friend took it real easy afterwards and did great....her sister got back into things too soon and ended up back in for a second surgery. so u have to be real careful... friend also did yoga after she recovered and said it helped tremendously. good luck and let us know how you do, i was wondering where u were.

Thanks so much ladies....all of this support and understanding really helps to make things bearable!!

Cynthia, I've been around off and on, but I can hardly stand to sit here long enough to read some posts, much less reply to any of them! But I'm checking on ya'll, Oh, and I have been considering Yoga very seriously for when I'm better...I've heard good things about it.

Veryln, I did receive a notice that someone tried to PM me and box was full...I did go in and clear it out, and I would love to talk to you! Same discs..L5 - S1.. What a relief to hear that you are doing so well, and I sure appreciate the good wishes!

Take care ladies, and thanks again!
