Mom starts treatments today

My mom has started the radiation and Chemo today. Please say a prayer for her - this is the first time she has been nervous! She doesn't know what to expect.

She has the radiation for 6 weeks and the chemo (cistoplasin and 5FU). She has the chemo 2 times. One for 96 hours and the other for 4 hours. Will she get sick soon or does it take awhile? I am going to see her today. She got a portocath put in on weds so she can go home with the 96 hour treatments. Has anyone had one of those before?

Thanks to the hystersisters!

Mom starts treatments today

Hi Jettali!!
I will keep your mom in my prayers. I had cisplatin and I am wondering if that is the drug you are calling cistoplasin? My treatments were a bit different. Mine were for 5 hours for 5 days straight for 4 rounds three weeks apart. But I had 2 other drugs as well to make up the 5 hours. One drug I had to have every Tuesday, but that one was pretty easy, and only took an hour or so, and didn't seem to make me ill. But in total I probably had 80 hours of cisplatin. Do you know which one she is having for 96 hours?
I am not familiar at all with the other drug, but perhaps someone else will be.

I sailed through my first week, but my second week through my 4th week I was quite ill, in the evenings after treatments, and I believe the cisplatin was the main culprit of my vomiting. Its a strong one, but everyone reacts differently to chemo, and she may sail through without any problems. I also suffered from numbness in my hands and feet, and still have remnants of that even now 16 months later, but its certainly improved. I didn't have a port but had the IV in my hand everday. A couple ladies here have had the port though and can tell you about that.

I wish her well and please keep us posted on how she is doing!!
Hugs for you and for your mom Jettali!!

s Jettali

I'm glad to hear your mom's treatment is underway!
My chemo drugs were different. I had taxol and carboplatin. Hopefully your mom will tolerate the chemo pretty well. My regime was not pleasant, but definitely doable.
I have an infusaport. It's probably very similar to your mom's porta cath. Mine is on the upper left hand side of my chest. I've had it since last June. Most of the time I forget it is even there. Once the incision healed, it's been a breeze. I also get my blood drawn through it every three months. That is also the time I get it flushed. Having the port will definitely make getting chemo easier on her.
Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

cisplatin - thats it!

cisplatin that is what my mom is having. She went in at 8:30 and had until about 1:30 now off to radiation. She is having (i think) the 5FU for 96 hours. I am not positive. She will do this again in 4 weeks. For a total of 2 treatments of both the cisplatin and the 5 FU. She will be able to have the 96 hours at home because of the porta cath. She is doing really well right now. Waiting for the sickness to kick in. I guess they also gave her some medicine so she won't throw up. We'll see how it works.

Hi Jettali!

I wanted to add my thoughts and prayers for your mom. I hope that any side effects she gets are mild and easily managed.

I am not familiar either with the "5FU" type of chemo, unless I've heard it by another name. I, like Karen, had the Taxol/Carboplating then another type called Topotecan.

Please keep us posted on how your mom is doing and again, I'll be keeping your mom and you in my prayers.

{{hugs}}
