Re: 3 weeks post hysterectomy: bright red blood

Hi AmberLen, How much bleeding are you having? Do you need a maxi pad, is a liner enough, or is it just there when you wipe? Generally the rule is "if you're soaking a pad in an hour, call your doctor and/or head to Emergency".

It is normal to have spotting / discharge / light bleeding that starts and stops at random throughout our initial recovery which is approximately 6 weeks. And some bright blood can also be normal. Many women find they have bright red spotting around the 3 week mark, as many of us have our stitches dissolving at this time. As the stitches dissolve, extra stresses can be placed on the healing incision at the vaginal cuff and cause some spotting. When this happened to me, I took it easy for a few days, put my feet up lots and read some good books. It tapered right off.

If you are bleeding heavily, please call your doctor ASAP. If you are experiencing fever, pain or any symptoms different than what you were told to expect post op, call your doctor.

Re: 3 weeks post hysterectomy: bright red blood

I was standing and then I felt wet. I went to the bathroom and it was red blood it had soaked through my panties and shorts. I put a normal pad on. Now its just light bleeding to almost spotting. I called the emergency number. They told me it was normal. It scared me because i haven't had any bleeding since the surgery. I went here first. Thank you for your reply. It helps... It just scared me so bad because everything has been so smooth.

Re: 3 weeks post hysterectomy: bright red blood

I feel for you, I'm not quite at 3 weeks but I passed what looks like brown clots today. I bled for the first 3 days lightly post op. I am prepared for possible bright red thanks to this site. Godspeed recovery to us all!

I'm glad you were able to reach a medical professional and put your mind at ease. Don't be alarmed if the spotting stops and then starts again. My spotting came and went... Every time I thought it was gone for good, it returned. And the color was always changing too.

Sometimes increased spotting coincides with an increase in activity. If this happens it may mean you've done too much and you need to scale back on your activity level.
