Hemorrhaging

Hello,

I have been reading your posts for a few weeks now, I have never posted before, so here it goes.

I am 30 years old and I had a hysterectomy(removed ovaries, uterus and left cervix) on 7-11-02. I also had a temporary filter inserted before my surgery to protect me from clotting. I am Factor V Leiden positive and have a history of PE's. The filter was inserted for protection of clots. I was on Lovenox before surgery and after surgery I resumed Lovenox and Coumadin.

My surgery went really well. The filter was removed with no clots and up until this past Sunday everything was good. Sunday I started vaginally spotting, light pink. Monday I had a fever and the chills, no fever or chills after Monday. On Thursday the bleeding increased and the color changed to bright red. I called the doctor, he did not seem to worried, which was comforting. On Friday the bleeding increased even more and I also started having blood in my urine. I called two of my doctors and they have halted my Coumadin dosage. This morning, no change.

I am just wondering if anyone can relate or offer suggestions. I have read several of your posts, but I really haven't seen any posts similiar to what I am experiencing. Has anyone else had problems with hemorrhaging? I don't know when the hemorrhaging is too much? Where is the blood coming from?

Thanks,

Lori

Hemorrhaging

Hi Lori, !
I'm worried about you. I'm not familiar with your clotting issues, but in general, bright red blood at two weeks post op needs to be taken very seriously. If you are still having bright red blood in your discharge and/or urine today you really need to be seen by a DR. If your DR won't see you (I'd try there first of course), please go to the ER today.
We're going to move this post over to post op, where hopefully someone else will come along who understands more about clotting factors and the special issues they might raise.
Please take good care of yourself, , and let us know how you're doing.
s,
-Linda

Lori, You're bleeding sounds like too much to me. I was told any bright bleeding needed to be seen, especially if it was like a period. If your doctor can't see you then I'd get to the ER so you can be seen by someone. I would want to err on the side of caution if it were me. Please get someone to see you. Don't wait until Monday or Tuesday.

coumadin

I am also very worried about you. Did they halt your coumadin before surgery? My Dad is on blood thinner and every time he has surgery they halt his medication. This would also still be in your system, as it would take awhile for clotting to begin. My Dad bleeds alot after just a little cut. CALL your DR.

Hemorrhaging

Hi Lori,

I am very sorry you have to go through this. It must be very frightening for you. Please contact your Dr if you are concerned. It sounds like he is staying on top of this closely and would certainly not mind a phone call from you.

I am glad he stopped your coumadin, did he check your protime & INR? If not, you might suggest that he call in an order to the hosptial or have you go to the ER and have that done. It takes several days to really make a huge difference in the levels after stopping the coumadin.

Please be very careful. No nicks, cuts or scratches and NO FALLS while the coumadin has your blood too thin! If you have been on this long, you know all of this, but just a reminder.

Please, call your Dr again!

I don't know how your blood clotting affects things. I was told that if I ever had bleeding that soaked a pad in 2 hours that I needed to go in to the doctor, urgent care or emergency room immediately!

Hemorrhaging

Lori...I am having a similar experience, tho I did not have a clotting problem. Ihave been bleeding bright red since day 10, and am now at almost 7 weeks. I went for my checkup last week and my dr did a culture and found a bacterial infection and put me on antibiotics. I am done with the meds and still bleeding so I plan to put a call in to the dr on monday. It's very frustrating I hope you are able to get to the bottom of your problem soon...I think we've all been through enough.
Good luck.

Robin

Hemorrahing

Good morning,

Thanks for all of your replys. I spent 9 hours at the ER yesterday and into early this morning. I had two pelvic exams, two urine sames were taken and they also performed a clean stick urine test. My pelvic exams showed some bleeding at the surgical site. The urine samples came back positive for blood, however, the clean sample did not. It seems the blood in my urine was from the vaginal bleeding. My hemoglobin was down a pinch, but nothing to be alarmed about right now. The conclusion was elevated bleeding due to anitcoagulation. Bleeding a little abnormally because I am on blood thinners. My Coumadin dosage has been slowed down.

Thanks for all your concern and help.

I am so glad to hear that you have found the cause of your problem. Not knowing or trying to guess what it could be is so hard. Now take care of yourself and have a successful recovery!!
