my castle story

Let me give you guys some background first. The week before surgery my hubby & I went on a vacay to the SW corner of Michigan...there is a really small quiet area were we can totally relax. Oh BTW it is on the beach & I am half irish & burn at the drop of a hat. I swear I used sunscreen but I don't think I used enough & ended up with a bad burn on my legs, arms & shoulders.

I had to be at the castle at 8am for surgery at 10. Well, it was raining that day & with rush hour we left a little early so we got there a little early but so what I would rather be early then late. We waited about 45 minutes before they called my name to go back to the pre-op area. I get my weight & vitals taken & get into my lovely gown & then the nurse tells me they don't have the results of my preg test that I did the day before. She finally finds it in the computer so that is good. My doc was running about 30 minutes behind so we waited there for about an hour. During that hour my husband just teased me to no end....he does that when he is nervous & he was more nervous then me.

Finally the "A" man & my doc come talk to me & my family & we get going. they give me the happy drug but it really did not knock me out so the gave me some more. Next thing I remember is them trying to wake me up in either the OR or the recovery room. They could not take the breathing tube out of my mouth cause I was not breathing strong enough yet. Well, they gave a drug called Narcan which deactivates all the pain meds & seditives in your system. So I woke up in pain!!!! The recovery nurse could not get it under control. when got to my room I asked for something for pain & my nurse got me a one time dose of demerol through my IV and that did not work. So, I told my nurse to tell my doc that they gave me Narcan in the recovery room. She did & he ordered a Dilaudid PCA, (its like morphine just a different drug). After she got that set up it took about 2 1/2 hours to get my pain under control!! I was watching the clock and pushing that button every 10 minutes. The rest of the night went alot better after that.

The next morning when my doc came in I almost kissed him for giving me the PCA!!!!LOL I told me he was not aware that they gave me Narcan & once he heard they did he ordered the PCA. Later that morning they took out my catheter. After breakfast I got up & walked down to the nurses desk. After lunch I took a shower & was able to finally pee. So at 2pm my SIL picked me up & took me home.

I have to tell what this castle does for their hysterectomy patients. About a week before surgery I received in the mail a book that explained everything to expect. When I woke up after surgery I found the cutest little tummy pillow. The volunteers that work at the hospital make for the women who have either a C-section or hyst this pillow. It is about 8x11, one side is pink & white checked & the other side a very pale pink. On the pale pink side there is a big heart that has written in it "We Care. MBMC auxillary & Volunteers" They make these by hand & donates them for free to the patients. I just thought that was so sweet!!

BTW to all LIW, the waiting is really the worst.

Rooney,

Wow!! That was FAST!!!!! I am so sorry you had the pain trouble. That should have been handled better but at least they finally got it under control for you!

Hope you are recovering comfortably! Take care of yourself!!

Welcome Home Rooney,

I'm so sorry that you had the unexpected pain afterwards, but very glad that your breathing did get stronger and that you are OK now.

And what a sweet thing for the hospital volunteers to do for their hyst and C-section patients!!

Be sure to get lots of , lots of fluids, walk a little each and don't try to do too much too soon.
