Lap vs. Abdominal

I am having a hard time deciding which route to go, Lap or Abdominal. I have been hearing that Lap has it's advantages but the possibilities of complications can be higher. Can I get your input please.

Lap vs. Abdominal

Hi--
I had Lap on May 29th (LAVH) and my surgery went very well, no complications. A big consideration about this procedure is how much experience your surgeon has in performing it. There is a learning curve --- practice makes perfect. My surgeon has been doing laps ever since the technique first became available. I had total confidence in him (I also worked for him for 8 years--so I KNEW he was good).

I think the main concern about complications with this procedure is injury to an internal organ. They are working through very small incisions and looking through a scope, so they have to be very meticulous. In my experience, this happens very rarely, but as with any kind of surgery there are going to be risks. My recovery was completely normal.

Has your doctor discussed with you which method he prefers and which one he feels is best for you?

Lap vs. Abdominal

Hi~~ I chose whatever my Dr. was most comfortable doing. It was his job to do the surgery and I wanted it to be as easy on him as possible. All I had to do was heal. Good luck to you.

Another factor is whether you're actually suitable for the vaginal procedure - some women just aren't candidates.

Generally speaking, the recovery from LAVH is easier and a little shorter, but there are higher complication rates for things like infection, etc. Double edged sword, really!

I had my SAH on July 30 - I wasn't a candidate for either vaginal procedure due to my wonderful elongated cervix and shorter-than-normal vaginal vault. It's the best decision I ever made! But anyway - these are questions to ask your doc, when you decide which way you'd prefer to go.

Best wishes, and stay strong
