Hi, I'm 8 weeks postop TAH/BSO and I notice my hair is looking pretty shaggy. I remember reading something about taking vit E and some other stuff. Does anyone have ideas/experience? Thanks, Judymk

Hi Judy!

I don't really have any pearls of wisdom to offer about the hair, but I have seen it mentioned here and in the Hormone Jungle as well. I think, in some cases, anesthesia does a number on the hair and it takes a while to get back to normal.

Hormones can play a part in this, too.

You might try doing a search (using the purple button above) and see what others have said on the subject.

Hang in there, sweetie! :hair:

thinning hair

Hey there! I am 6 weeks post op and so far I haven't had any thining of hair. But, I had a different kind of surgery, (gall bladder) about 10 years ago and that was when I lost some hair. The doctor said that some people have that when they have general anasthesia(sp). It's a side effect. Don't worry about it, my hair stopped thinning and grew back. I was probably the only one who noticed the loss.

Take care, Josie

yes...my hair has been falling out since my hyst...it also is still not taking the color like it should. My hairdresser told me that the anesthtesia affects the hair and also hormones. She said that once hormone levels even out my hair should start coming back in. She said a lot of women she has seen have had their hair come in even thicker than before once it starts to come back in. Myhair has always been very thick so i'm not even missing it now..i just hate cleaning out of the tub.. and i do wish it would behave at coloring time..I guess we just have to be patient..

BAD :hair: !!!

I haven't had a problem with my hair thinning but my hair won't hold a perm. Hairdresser warned me just before my last perm there may be a problem for possibly up to one year from the anesthetic.

Judy
I also noticed a couple of weeks after surgery that my hair had gotten thinner, less shiny and un-manageable. I read on this site about taking Evening Primrose Oil and Fish Oil for hair...and I think Folic Acid is also suppose to help. I thought...it was worth a try and I am so glad I did. My hair has gotten back to its old self and has taken off in a growing spurt....My hair typically grows very slowly. I called my hairdresser after surgery to ask his advise and he said to do a couple of hot oil treatments every week for a few months, which I am doing. I really need to put some color on my hair, but I am putting it off as long as I can....which won't be much longer. My hairdresser said that the color I normally use may have to be adjusted because of the effects of the anethestics.
I haven't read any of your posts of CC lately....How did your 6 weeks post op go? Chris

Hi Ladys

Judy I had this hair thinning and falling out.... I was going crazy I didn't know why this was happening.... Then my DR told me it was from the surgery and the shock to my body as well as the changes... He told me to take flaxseed oil w/omaga3 and a supplement called Hair-skin and nails w/msm.....I did and boy did it work...I have to cut my hair every 3 weeks and my nails grow like crazy..........You can find a hair supplement in any health food store or vit store...The one I take is by Andrew Lessman....Not sold in stores ... But through his company and now on HSN[home shopping network]

It will get better as time passes........

s to all...SIS

Thinning hair

I had a total hyster in June. My normally thick hair is falling out like crazy. I had to put a special cover on the drain so I wouldn't clog up the pipes. How long will this last? Thinner hair is cool for me, but bald would be a step too far!

There is a thread on the Hormone Jungle right now with 26 responses that are definitely a must read for anyone with this problem. It is entitled "Is anyone's hair starting to get thin" or something like that, but there is an in depth discussion on every type of vitamin, supplement, hair care product and lots of support on the psychological trauma of losing your hair. :hair:

Hi Judy!! I'm so glad you posted on this topic! I thought I was going CRAZY!! Ever since my surgery, today I am 6 weeks post-op, I have felt as if I was losing more hair than normal. You really can't tell a difference to look at it but when I wash & fix it, it seems like there is more than normal falling out. Thanks for letting me know I'm not paranoid!! Paula
