supressing ovaries with birth control pills and lupron injection

I am 45, and have been on bc pills for ten years to prevent ovulation due to cysts on ovaries. Periodically I would still ovulate. One year ago Dr. put me on bc pills continually due to hot flashes. Since that time my periods came every three months for about ten day, with heavy flow and clots. After those six months, periods came every 30 days like clock work, but very heavy flow and cramps, lasting about ten days. This happened for about five months. All this time I was taking bc pills. Dr suggested Lupron injection to supress ovaries completely, which i did have the injection. Two weeks later I could have sworn that I ovulated. Went to Dr. 4 weeks after Lupron shot, ultra sound was done on ovaries. Good new the ovaries were quite, even hard to find on ultra sound. Lupron worked. About four days prior to this appt. I was moody, and crying alot. Felt like pms. I told dr he said couldn't be, because ovaries were basically not working. Left my Dr. office Tuesday evening, and wouldn't you know it, I started my period two days later. I did ovulate in the middle of my cycle and I did have PMS. Can't explain why ovaries were quite during ultr-sound. My ovaries want to ovulate regardless of the meds we use to supress them. But when ovulating I have back pain and cramps heavy bleeding and really bad crying spells.{Reak Bad crying spells} Hysterectomy has been discussed but due to my age Dr. really wants to try to hold on to ovaries as long as possible. He says the dicision is mine. I am concerned about HRT due to my history of trying control ovaries with more and more problems. My ovaries are causing all these problems could it be even worse with hysterectomy and no ovaries. Anybody with problems like mine please post back. I want to have the hysterectomy but need some other opinions from other ladies.

Welcome!

Hi, Cindy! Welcome to HysterSisters--best site for support and comfort and info! I'm sorry you've had so many problems with your ovaries and bleeding all these years. It doesn't sound like the BCP or Lupron is working very well, but then some women need several months on Lupron before the bleeding stops. I don't have personal experience with Lupron, but I'll give you a link to a past thread where women are discussing it. Lupron is notorious for causing major depression in some women, so it's not surprising that you felt moody and weepy. http://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/sho...ghlight=lupron

The decision to go ahead with a hyst is a difficult one to make, and many times it depends on how good a quality of life you have if you leave things as they are. If you are very miserable and in pain, you may want to decide for a hyst. We do highly recommend getting a second or even a third opinion from other doctors, though. Read all you can here to give you an idea of what to expect. Click on the princess logo in the upper left corner, and scroll down to find pull-down menus for Ladies in Waiting. There are many stories and hints there. Then feel free to ask any questions you have, and we'll try to find answers for you. Good luck in making your decision! s and best wishes!
