How long can it possibly take to schedule surgery?!?!

Greetings from California! I am new to the website and am currently a Lady In Waiting, but unfortunately am waiting for someone to get my surgery scheduled! When I had my consultation on 8/21/02 with my doctor, she went over my path report from the LEEP procedure performed two weeks prior, that showed Stage 3 carcinoma in situ and LAVH is the intended plan of erradication. I may also have endometriosis, so may end up having a TAH instead. Anyway....was told that I would be hearing from the girl in scheduling, which I never did, so I called her myself. She told me that my doctor's rotation at the surgical center didn't come up again until November 1st!! I told her that my doctor had indicated that she would like to do my surgery in the next few weeks, so she was going to contact the doctor to see what she wanted to do and let me know. Never got a call back. Called twice after and left messages that were not returned. Called the doctor's nurse and let her know what was going on. She was very apologetic and said she would look into it, and that has gone nowhere too. Am planning on calling the doctor directly next week and see if she knows when the surgery is scheduled, and let her know what the last few weeks have been like! I'm not trying to be demanding, and I know that there are other patients, but I do think a little common courtesy is in order. Since I have never been through a major surgery before, nor cancer, I do not have a clue as to how all the scheduling business works, and can't seem to get anyone to care enough to give me some answers. It has been very frustrating to say the least!! Am I being out of line here? Did any of the Princess's out there have a problem like this??? I have been visiting the website regularly since my diagnosis was made, and I take comfort in knowing that there are so many others that share the same problems and concerns, but by the same token I am absolutely amazed that how many women there are, all over the world, who are experiencing the same problems of just being female. You guys have been a source of strength, information and inspiration.

How long can it possibly take to schedule surgery?!?!

Hi Gail,
I am sorry you are having such a tough time getting scheduled. I wonder if it would pay to go in person to the scheduler's office. I am trying to move up my surgery and may have to go in person.

Good luck and I wish you well!

How long can it possibly take to schedule surgery?!?!

Hi Gail I'm in California too! I'm sorry you're having so much trouble getting your surgery scheduled. We shouldn't have to be the ones to do all the work to get that to happen, but for some sisters it does seem to turn out that way. Unfortunately, I guess you have to keep after people until you finally get an answer. Hopefully that will be soon!

I'm very glad you found us before your surgery, and that you posted and introduced yourself. I'm hoping that once you get your surgery date, everything will go well and I will be seeing you in the Post Op forum!

-Linda

How long can it possibly take to schedule surgery?!?!

Hi Gail,

That does seem like a long time to wait, although I know I had to wait six weeks after my cone biopsy for healing. Maybe it is the same with the LEEP procedure? Does your surgeon have privileges at another hospital where it could be done sooner?

Glad you found this website....lots of great ladies here!

How long can it possibly take to schedule surgery?!?!

s Gail

Welcome to CC. I'm glad that you decided to post.
You had your LEEP the beginning of August. Your surgery might be scheduled the beginning of November? That's when this doc has their next OR rotation? But nothing is definite?
I think it is time for you to become very demanding. Three months is a long time to anticipate surgery. Like Judy said, I would go to the office in person for some answers.
A better idea may be to schedule a second opinion with a gyn oncology surgeon.
Please keep in touch.

How long can it possibly take to schedule surgery?!?!

Thanks to all for your responses. I too thought about making a personal visit to the doctor's, however I live in a small town and was referred to a specialist in Fresno, CA which is an 1 1/2 hour drive from where I live!! When I was talking with the doctor during the consultation, she indicated that she had ways of working around the "schedule" (I'm assuming the surgical rotations?), but I'm really beginning to think that the scheduling person hasn't even talked to my doctor.....that's why I want to speak to the doctor myself and let her know what's been going on. I'm normally a very patient person, but I think this has gone on long enough!! I'm sure the people at the medical group who answer the phone are getting tired of hearing from me every week, but I'm even more tired of making long distance phone calls that get no responses!!! AAARRGGHH Thanks for letting me vent!!!!! Hopefully my next posting will have a surgery date!!!

XXOO to all my new Sisters--you are terrific!!!!!

How long can it possibly take to schedule surgery?!?!

Hi Gail...All of this waiting for a schedule really is taking a very long time. After i had my consultation with the oncologist gyno, i had the surgery in a week. However before my hysterectomy i also had to have a colonscopy, a stress test and a echo cardiogram. MY doctor scheduled all of that within a week and i had the surgery the next week. If my doctors and the nurses had given me the run around, like yours are, i would show up at their office and see what they had to say to my face. There are lots of good doctors out there and if this one is not giving you the satisfaction you want, maybe it is time to look for a new one. Mine in New York are wonderful and very caring. In fact, the nurse that did the scheduling had called my house even before i had gotten home with informaton for me!!
Hope all works out well.

I am new here too! I am so sorry that you are having to worry about so much right now. Let me ask a question, are you going to a GYN or a GYN oncologist? When my GYN told me that my LEEP biopsy showed cancer, he spent less that 60 seconds in the room with me. He had the door open and standing in the hall when he asked if I had any questions. Said it would take about a month to get me on the schedule. I had gone to the doctor by myself that day because he kept telling me that it didn't look bad at all and even if it was cancer that the LEEP usually got it all. Luckily, I had already made an appointment with a gyn oncologist which fell two days after my news. I could not believe the difference. She spent 3 hours talking to me and my family. A total examination and asked me what day I wanted to have my surgery. She even scheduled me a week sooner than I really wanted! My TAH/BSO is scheduled for next Monday the 16th. My GYN called with date that they had set and it wasn't until the middle of October. I found out I had cancer on August 23.

How long can it possibly take to schedule surgery?!?!

Hi, Gail,
As you can tell from the other posts, you've come to the right site and the right forum.

I was diagnosed with uterine endometrial cancer on July 1, talked with my GYN on July 2 in her office, met with the GYN Oncologist on July 5. My GYN didn't go into a lot of detail, but left that up to the GYN Oncologist. She did say it was Stage 1 which has a very good prognosis. When I saw the GYN Oncologist I was scheduled for surgery on Aug 6, a month later. I certainly didn't want to wait that long, just thinking about it - imaginations are just not good for some things. But...time doesn't stand still for anybody.

Hope you get all the scheduling straightened out. You're under enough stress without this added. I found a way to deal with DR offices when I get lousy service. I speak from the waiting room so all the patients can hear me! Service always improved tremendously.

Glad you found us; be sure to keep posting.
s,
Laura

How long can it possibly take to schedule surgery?!?!

FINALLY!!!! Well ladies, I am VERY happy to report that I will be headed to the castle for surgery on Wednesday, September 18th (pre-op visit on the 16th). My GYN will also have a GYN ONC in attendance; guess coordinating with him and the hospital scheduling both created what seemed like an eternity of a wait to me!! I can't believe that in less than 10 days, I will be cancer free!!! Yippeeeeee!!!!!!

Thanks again to all for your help, support and words of encouragement!
