TAH/BSO 10 wks ago on no hrt doing the suppliment/cohosh thing. I wake up every night (between 3:00 and 5:00AM) hot/not sweating but WIDE awake. Forget about getting back to sleep. I go to sleep fine but the AM thing is getting me. Don't take day time naps, drink caffiene etc. Anyone else? Any suggestions? Thanks Judy

do you wake up at night wide awake?

I am almost one year post-op, and I am wide awake most nights, too. I was told insomnia is a big symptom of menopause. I only take calcium/vitamin D supplement every day. I think partly because I wake up is because Im too hot at night. I run a fan all night long...this really helps me. The whirring noise, and the moving air really do help. good luck!

do you wake up at night wide awake?

I am a year post-op and I did have a period of time after my TAH/BSO where I could not sleep or if I could fall asleep I would wake up wide awake. I tried, warm baths before bed, drinking Ovaltine (which I feel really helped!), reading, and even Tylenol PM. At about 6 months post-op I started to feel pretty well and started to sleep. You are pretty early in your recovery. It takes time.

All the best to you!

do you wake up at night wide awake?

Judy
My gyn prescribe Ambien this week. I called her in desperation. At first I would fall totally asleep but wake about every two hours and then I started also waking at between 2-4 am and couldn't fall back to sleep, just dozzing. Then last week I would fall into bed exhausted and toss and turn, go out on the couch, watch tv, read, nothing worked. I had tried Tylenol pm, benedryl (too drying, dont need that right now)....finally broke down and called her. She prescribed the lowest dose of Ambien and I have had two nights of blissful un-interupted sleep. She said to take it for 7-10 days to try to re-establish my sleep pattern.
I was getting to the point of feeling jet lagged.

PS I ordered the progesterone cream....It should be in next week.

do you wake up at night wide awake?

HI there Judymk....

I too have been having very interrupted sleep since I had surgery. I have tried Ambien and Tylenol pm but neither has really worked. My nights consist of going to bed around the same time (they say you should do that), I read for a while, then I feel tired and as soon as the light goes out I lay awake for an hour or so, falling asleep for about 2 hrs., then wake up and I'm wide awake and so forth. Usually I am pretty hot too, not sweating though. But I run a fan and blow it right on me! I am amazed I am not a crab. I am 4 wks post op. I started taking a low dose estrogen patch and will be supplementing with natural stuff. It just seems this is one of those menopause horrors.

Chris5 -- Can I ask you are you ordering the Progesterone Cream for sleep deprivation? Does it help with sleep? thanks!

Good luck to you and all of us...we are Sleepless in......

do you wake up at night wide awake?

Coryann
I ordered the progesterone cream for a number of reason...one being the sleep problems. Fortunately the Ambien is working for me....I think part of my problem is I find a dozen things to do around 10pm and don't finish up until 1am....I need to get a standard bedtime and try to stick to it. I have had two nights of sleep taking the Ambien and I feel like a new woman.

No Sleep

I could have written any of the above posts - I had my surgery 3/15 and have gone through all sorts of HRT prescriptions and now I am just doing it cold turkey. In fact my sleeplessness and
hot flashes have subsided quite a bit - I still get abnormally warm at night and find that the fan works best.... of course DH says he is going to call Boeing and see if they want to use our bedroom as a wind tunnel experiment... but having the air blow over me helps a lot.
I only take a multivitamin and a calcium tablet daily - however it sounds like I should increase some of my vitamins based on the
other posts.

I am looking forward to winter this year - I can go sit on the porch in the middle of the night if I get warm and restless.

Sisterneed and everyone, I read in one of Trish's articles, when I was in the middle of a terrible insomnia stretch, that Ovaltine 30 minutes before bed helps. It has tryptophan (sp?) in it, like turkey has, that makes people sleepy. I tried it and it helps me sleep.I know this is a serious problem with a lot of the sisters and it might just be the placebo effect with me. I don't want to trivialize a serious problem but it is worth a try. Plus you get extra calcium in the deal!

Love,
Maggie
