Hypothyroid & iron deficiency

The other problem with thyroid testing has to do with your levels of sex binding hormone globulin (SBHG). It can "tie up" too much of your circulating thyroid and other hormones, not leaving enough for their various receptors, but overall levels still can register as "normal".

Suetoo is right on with her recommendation about Vitamin C and iron absorption. When you eat that spinach salad, make sure that it has orange slices or lemon juice. And heme iron really is the best source, although as a sort-of vegetarian I'm not really fond of meat. However, about once a month I will make some tri-tip...and I marinate it in salsa and lime juice to add in the C.

Good luck getting to the bottom of this! You may want to ask for an endocrine consult. A lot of doctors dabble in thyroid issues without understanding them particularly well...

Songsister: I'd only use the natural kelp, I'm sure you can find something else with iodine, but I prefer natural. They are not expensive, because they are not an "in" supplement. Also pay attention to your other nutritional needs, ie. good multiple vitamin. Weak adrenal glands, etc. all give the same symptoms as low thyroid. Dr. Lee says lack of progesterone often does. I always try the natural approach before prescription. Alas, doesn't always work, but often does.
