Anyone with Hypothyroidism??

Did anyone have problems after their surgery with their medication for hypothyroidism? I've been trying to find a link between the two on the web, but, can't find any.

Hi, BuffyGeek! I'm sorry I don't have experience with hypothyroidism, but I'll give you a link to a recent thread on this in the Hormone Jungle. http://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/sho...inding+hormone Hopefully, someone will be along soon who knows about this better than I do, to post here. s

Another good place to look for information on this is www.about.com There is a section on thyroid and lots of articles and information.. A recent newsletter discussed the inter-relationship of your hormones. Any change in any of your hormones can affect the balance. Yes, it can cause changes in your bodies need for meds. Ask your Dr to order the needed test, make the needed adjustment.

I only had surgery 2 weeks ago, but so far I haven't noticed any changes and my doctor didn't mention that as a possible complication.

If you are taking estrogen, especially unopposed by progesterone, one thing that can happen is that the estrogen has raised the level of SHBG (binding globulin) in your blood and it's binding the thyroid so that the levels are normal in your blood but they aren't "free" to do their job. There's some more about the kind of tests that can reveal this at www.hormonejungle.com/thyroid.php and www.hormonejungle.com/janie.php

Edited to say--whoops, I see that I should have read the whole thread and I'd have seen the link to Mary Shomon's site!! It's really terrific for any thyroid problem and links to other sources of information.

A lot of us have found over the years that we needed a boost in dose of thyroid medication post-op.

Oh, and there is another connection in that pituitary hormones can be thrown out of balance post-op. This is rarer, but it can also affect TSH, which is a pituitary hormone. So, yes, there is a connection.

Yep, I am fighting with mine now. I've had 2 medication adjustments. I take synthroid. See your dr. and ask him/her to check things out. Karlene

Anyone with Hypothyroidism??

Hi all,

I am hypothyroid and I had to have my level of synthroid adjusted following my hyst. I still have my ovaries, but it still had an effect. My doctor reduced my dosage. I was real emotional following my surgery - to the extreme. So my Dr did a blood test. The only thing that needed adjusting was my thyroid medication.

Take care,
Karen

I am hypothyroid and as suggested by my GP, plan to get a blood test in a few weeks to check my levels to see if my Synthroid needs to be adjusted.
