HRT Worries

First, let me say thanks so much for all the support and useful information!

Since I scheduled my castle visit (8 days to go!), I keep having a different “Worry of the Week” and this week it’s HRT. I’m scheduled for a TAH/BSO so I won’t have ovaries when I get out. My doctor is going to give me a patch, and she said I’d need to wear one for about 2 years.

I currently go through a bout of W*2 (Witchy and Weepy) before each period, and I get through those times by reminding myself that it’s caused by hormones, it will only last a short while, and then I’ll feel like myself again. I’ve been reading about HRT, and how the “balance” of hormones is sometimes out of whack, resulting in W*2 after the hyst. My fear now is that I’ll be like that forever! Not to mention increased hot flashes, which I just hate.

My questions are: How common is a post-op hormone imbalance? If it happens to me, will I feel W*2 all the time, or will it come and go? If I don’t find the right balance of hormones, will it eventually go away (even if that is years down the road) or will I really be out of whack forever?

Thanks in advance!

HRT Worries

I don't know much statistically, but maybe hearing my experience will help to put your mind at ease. I had my hysterectomy (TAH/LSO) one week ago today. One of my worries was also the hormone issue, especially because I had a past history of post partum depression. Also, I had my right ovary removed a year ago and it took a few days for the left one to come out of shock which resulted in a few miserable days of hot flashes and crying spells. Needless to say, I was very concerned about how I would do on hormones after my hysterectomy.
Well, they put me on an estrogen patch within hours of coming out of surgery. I have not noticed any difference in my moods, nor have I experienced any hot flashes. (also, my facial skin has never been clearer or brighter, don't know if it has anything to do with the estrogen, but I am loving it!)
Bear in mind that it has only been a week (in fact, I changed my patch for the first time this morning). But, as far as I am concerned at this time, this patch is the greatest thing going! Of course. everyone is different, so your experience may be different. But my advice would be to trust your doctor, and don't buy trouble before it happens. If you do experience menopausal symptoms, your doctor should be able to work with you to get you back on track.

Best wishes for an easy recovery!
