What happens to the ovaries after menopause?

I am in the last stages of Menpause and am having a LAVH on Dec. 30th. Tonight I went to a pre-operative educational class at the hospital. the RN giving the class said she was told that after menopause, the ovaries dry up like a prune and are useless. First of all, does anyone know if that is true and secondly, I had originally planned to keep my ovaries, but after hearing that they may be dried up and useless, maybe it isn't such a good idea.

I am so confused!

What happens to the ovaries after menopause?

i have read in many places that the ovaries continue to produce small amounts of hormones even after menopause. i was menopausal before my surgery ( i had ovaries removed also) and there is just no comparison in how i felt before and after hormonally. the surgical menopause was much more intense. ovary removal is a very peronal decision and one that you should investigate throughly....and only you and your dr can make this decision......yuck..i know . about the only thing good about ovary removal that i can say is i am much less worried about ovarian cancer and my hrt was pretty easy to straighten out because my ovaries were not sputtering hormones. i don't think the nurse that spoke at the class had her ovaries out . good luck with your decision.

What happens to the ovaries after menopause?

Hi there,
I agree with Cynthia. The decision to remove apparently healthy ovaries is a difficult and very personal one. From what I've read, I do believe that they can continue to eke out small amounts of hormones even after menopause. However, and I don't know the actual statistics {could be good to ask your doc}, as you will see from reading on this site, following hysterectomy, some women's ovaries just shut down anyway or generally function only for a few years, perhaps because of alterations in the blood supply. So you might keep them and end up having more problems later on.

It seems that the standard medical advice is that if one is over 45 years old, take the ovaries and reduce risk of ovarian cancer. I went into my pre-op appointment determined to keep my ovaries. But after hearing my doctor talk very movingly about patients he had lost to ovarian cancer and having him recommend I take them out too, I decided to go ahead with it. I guess they were all covered with cysts and nasty looking anyway...

I still feel ambivalent about that decision, so I don't know what to advise you.
