help (fast)

I just found out yesterday (Dec. 10) that I need a hysterectomy. The Dr. wants to do the surgery as soon as possible.....probably the 16th. I don't want to worry my family, but I'm scared. I had my tubes tied after my last pregnancy, so more kids is not an issue. I just don't know what to expect or what the complications are. Also the rush as my nerves in a twitter. Any advice I can get will be greatly appreciated. I find out tomorrow if we are doing the surgery Monday.

Hi Lee!

You need a BIG ! I can only imagine the stress you are under right now. Sorry to say I am not too much help in the "what to expect" area (scheduled for 12/17) but I do highly recommend looking around this site. It has been a great help for me.

Hang in there!

Hi and welcome to Hystersisters!

While I am sorry you are having to face surgery, you have found the right place for loads of information, support and caring from women who have been through it.

It must be very frightening being told you need surgery and having less than a week to prepare for it. You did not mention what your diagnosis is or why your doctor is concerned to get this done quickly?

I had a LAVH/BSO a little over six months ago for uterine fibroids and adenomyosis. I was in the hospital one night. I had an uneventful surgery and recovery. Initial recovery from a hysterectomy is 6 - 8 weeks...ie., off work, resting/pampering a lot, and not overdoing anything. We emphasize a lot here about "healing right the first time" and giving yourself the best possible chance of a smoothy recovery. I think it is very important to openly communicate with your family about what you will be going through. You will need their support so you can heal properly.

I am sure more response will be coming along for you here---in the meantime.... there is a wealth of information in the Pull-Down Menus at the bottom of Hystersisters home page. There are a lot of pre-op tips that would be very helpful for you to read---questions to ask your doctor, what to take to the hospital, information for family and friends, seeking a second opinion. etc.
Keep reading as much as you can and post any questions that come up. The more informed you are the better prepared you will feel for your surgery.

I hope some of this helps!

Bet of luck to you - - - Try to look at it in a positive light. Most of us sat around in a state of panic for a month or two waiting and waiting and waiting for the surgery date to roll around. You only have to sweat it for a week, and the waiting is much much worse than the surgery is.

The best thing for you to do is just to stay on this website and look around and you will find all the information and answers to your questions that you need.

Keep us informed, please!

Same amount of time to prepare as you!

Hello,

I cannot tell you what to expect because I am still waiting my surgery it is on 12/14 this Saturday, I had just as much time as you to prepare for this whole thing, just very thankful for this website, it has a lot of useful info and if you look around you will see what I mean!

The last week has been driving me nuts, last wednesday I seen my doctor and he said hysterectomy, I am scheduled to have a LAVH, and I came home and searched the web to find out what I was having done to me. I am only 26 and the last week has been pure hell. I also recommend that you make it to a chat, the princesses are a great help and tell you what to expect. With out these wonderful ladies, I would surely lose my mind!

And like they have said to you, the waiting is the worst part so far.. I will let you know how surgery goes later LOL! But best wishes and think of it this way, you finally get you chance to be treated like a princess!

Hyst

Welcome to the most wonderful site on the internet!!!
While you are stressed about having the surgery so soon, think of it as an advantage that you did not have to wait and stress like the majority of us....that is by and far the worst part of the whole process....I knew in July I needed it done and waited until 11/4....
Take a deep breath and relax....I know you are thinking that is easy for me to say....It was such a comfort to find that I was not alone having it done....Knowing that were lots of us going through the same thing helped so much...I made some special friends thru this site.....Get your self some new pj bottoms and tees to wear at home...take some time and pamper yourself..haircut and the like....stock up on things you like to eat while you are home recovering...juices, books to read, etc....While this is a really stressful time, it will be over as soon as it was dropped upon you....I still can't believe that my surgery was only a month ago....back to work now too....
Good luck and you can come here and find comfort anytime of the day or night....
lilly

Why the rush?

Just wondering what the reason is for the hyst. Is it an emergency situation? Do you feel you need a second opionion, or more time?
I am scheduled for TVH on Jan. 7. I have nothing against having a hyst, but I am concerned as to why the Dr. is in such a hurry.
I'm sure you will know what the best decision is for you. Just want you to make that important decision and feel good about it!
Take care, and keep us posted.

Hi, also glad for you that you found this site, I too had very short notice about surgery..under 10 days. I learned a lot, like the p.j. bottoms...Marshalls had some that were great..drawstring worked best, no elastic...they had plenty. I got a few so I could have plenty to choose from as I wore them a lot. Any questions too, I found by using the "search" feature, I got answers from the past few months, and years!! Like about getting a wedge type pillow to put under your knees while in bed,to having straws for your water or juice.

Just keep checking this site out, and it will help. Also as you move along in your recovery...I found lots of help too. There were days that I thought I was going nuts, so I would post what was going on, and sure enough, someone else had been there, or was there also, then you know you're not going crazy, and you don't feel alone. I even was up at 4 a.m. one morning, and got a and that helped.

Good luck,Kathy

Same boat

I was in the same position - I had been bleeding to a point I was severely anemic. The GYN surgeon I was referred to said I had to have the surgery immediately. I had stopped bleeding, so I talked him into letting me have 10 days "to get my affairs in order". He kept in contact over the next days to be sure that I didn't have any more bleeding incidents and had my blood count rechecked twice during that period - he said that I could die if the bleeding let loose again. The good part was that I didn't have the two months or so of waiting that seems to be common. The other LIW seem to get rather stressed waiting - for you and me, that stress time is greatly reduced.

Good luck. I know it's scary. I wish you an uneventful surgery and a speedy recovery.
