Periods after Hysterectomy

I have read some of the articles posted on the web here and I am sorta confused. Some of the ladies have discussed having mini periods after they have had the removal of their uterus. Is this normal? I have a friend who had her uterus removed, kept one ovary so no hormones and kept cervix. She said she does not experience any "mini periods", but does however have those feelings of PMS but not as severe as when she was having a period.

Just curious about the periods, b/c I assumed once you had a hysterectomy your periods would stop.

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

Periods after Hysterectomy

If one has a total (uterus and cervix) hysterectomy there is no period although there may be some post op bleeding for awhile till everything heals. The area where the cervix was is stitched up closed sort of like how the end of a sock is so there is no period.

If one keeps the cervix (about the size of a coat button) and at least one ovary there is a chance for mini periods to occur because sometimes the cervix has a lining that can be shed every month. I have seen quite a few sisters on here that have them. Some say they are no big deal while one or two on the Road has had to go back and have the cervix removed such as one at this link below. Not all women have mini's but it's best to look over the options and talk with your dr. about what's best for you.
