ovarian cancer AFTER hysterectomy

I hope I am posting this question in the correct forum. Today my good friend found out that her mother has ovarian cancer that has spread to her liver. The weird thing is that she had a complete hysterectomy about 7 years ago and her ovaries were removed!! Can anyone explain to me how she could now have ovarian cancer with no ovaries? I had a TVH/BSO just four months ago so this really freaks me out! Thank you for any help you can give me. Christmas blessings to all...

You are a good friend. And yes, this situation is not too common, but can occur. Ovarian cells are shed throughout the abdomen when we are embryos. Hence, a form of cancer can develope from these stray cells, years after our ovaries are removed. It is called primary peritoneal cancer, and is basically a form of ovarian cancer. Treatment is also the same.
I hope you share our forum with your friend's mom. We'd love to have her visit.

This surprises many people but primary peritoneal cancer is a form of ovarian and treatment is the same. I do think we need to more awareness on this--it's rare but it does occur in women who think they're 100% protected against this disease. to your friend's mother.
