what meds to stop taking

I'm new here and am so glad I found this site. There are so many things I have learned. I,m having a tah on Feb. 3 and I'm getting very nervous. My question is what meds should I stop taking? I'm taking Darvocet for my endo/adno pain on a daily basis and the only thing my Dr office has told me is to not take ibuprofen or herbals for two weeks before. I just want to make sure its okay to still take the darvocet because I can't imagine suffering until Feb. 3. thanks.

what meds to stop taking

Hi there and Welcome!

It's great that you are aware of the need to stop some meds before surgery. However, you really need to talk to your doctor about which meds to take and not take. Most will tell you to stop a lot of meds because they could cause blood thinning which affects the ability for the blood to clot after surgery. In my case, I had to stop everything but regular strength tylenol two weeks before - although I was able to take my trusty Vicodin.

Since everyone is different, and all doctors are different, this is one that you need to talk to your doctor about!

Best wishes to you!

darvocet is synthetic codiene in a tylenol base

generally considered safe, but your doc will want to know you are on it and he or she is the one with veto power. Mine prescribed darvocet three days before surgery.

It's the anti-inflams and aspirin that are usually cited as no-nos And herbs, since western medicine doesn't understand them and don't study them as part of the pharmacology training, they don't know how to respond if an herb interacts with the anesthesia. This could be a bad situation if it happens. So many herbs out there.

I couldn't take aspirin or aspirin products for 10 days prior since they thin the blood. I get major headaches, like now, and all I could have was regular strength tylenol. Oh yeah, that helped. NOT. I certainly hope you don't have this problem. You'd be safer to know exactly what your dr has to say.
