Surgery Last Wed Jan 29 Things could have been better :(

Well I had no real complications.............at least nothing that was life threatening.

I always get sick when I have surgery, so I prepared ahead of time. I got a scapolomine patch for nausea. It is a great idea and usually works for me. I also take percodan on a regular basis for migraines, so I was concerned about the pain meds not working.

Well, I did get sick.........dry heaves.........just as bad because it still pulls on the ol' tummy muscles. I was so bad that they had to put my IV back in to give me nausea meds. I could take nothing by mouth.

And the PAIN..... Let me tell you!!!!!!!!! No pain med would work. I was in recovery for 6 hours! They never got it under control, but sent me up anyway. They adjusted my patient controled med so that it was the most I could give myself. It still didn't put a dent in it. After they took the first IV out I had no more pain med.

So, that is right..... Thursday...the day after my surgery I had NOTHING for pain. And I had NOTHING for pain until Monday when I could hold things down.

I got home on Saturday and by Saturday night I was so full of water weight that I could not even move my left leg. Plus I was vomiting for that evening. I went into the hospital weighing 124, when I weighed myself the night I got home I was 140!!!!!!

Well it has been a little over a week, and my point to all of this is I am still alive I made it through without pain meds during the most painful time. I ate crackers and stuck with ice chips for 5 days until I ventured out and had some rice chex cereal.

The water weight is gone, I'm down to 120. Although I am having hot flashes and night sweats I did NOT have my ovary taken out, so I'm assuming this will stop.

I am doing well now, The pain is tolerable, I can eat, and take pain meds (not taking them for a week helped).

I have to be honest those first 3-4 days I thought I couldn't make it. But, the nurses were great, the Dr. was wonderful, my family has been terrific at helping and I'm still here

Well, I'll write more at some point.................it is killing me sitting at this desk
Thanks for the well wishes card......................
Lisa

Hugs to you

Oh, Lisa, I'm so sorry you had such a rough time of it. Here's hoping things will continue to get better for you and this past week will be a faint memory very soon.

Take care!

You made it through the worst.

Have got several friends with chronic disease processes and it helps to think on how our surgical sufferings, which none of us can really predict, will actually diminish over time. So all we have to do is hang on using whatever techniques of mind-control & emotional control that we have developed so far. It must be good to know for sure you can get through that. Very often it's our worst experiences that prove the most self-defining, and give you the strength to face challenges in the future. Anyway, I feel such relief knowing you've got through the worst pain and are on the mend.
