New Hyster Sister

Hello All-
Day #4 after bilateral oopherectomy. Lost my only sister to ovarian cancer in 2000 and my Mom is now taking Chemo for breast cancer. Taking a crash course in menopause and HTR/ETR with an emphasis on alternatives to Estrogen. Finished HysterSisters book last night, just loved it. Not sure if I actually qualify since I still have my uterus? Anyway, I think I am in the correct forum.....

OK-here come the questions:
when can I expect a bowel movement?
what is the normal timeframe for the menopause symptoms to hit? I understand they are usually more severe when ovaries are surgically removed.

Here is my plan of action (so far):
Efforex-to help with hot flashes and mood swings
Black Cohosh-how much to take? When to take?
Estring-still sexually active
Fosamax for bones
Vitamin E and baby aspirin for heart

Am I missing anything obvious?
I appreciate all comments and suggestions. Glad to have an entire group of sisters! My sister happened to be an OB/GYN nurse and I sure wish she was around now!!

Thanks!!

New Hyster Sister

Hi Beth,

First, let me say how sorry I am for the loss of your sister. I'm sure you do miss her very much. And I hope that the chemo for your Mom's breast cancer is effective and she is on the road to good health.

Bowel problems and sluggishness are very common after surgery. The effects of anesthesia and pain meds really slow everything down for many of us. My Dr. had me take stool softeners twice a day until things returned to normal for me, which was around one month. Lots to and help, along with a balanced diet. Please give your Dr. a call if things don't start moving...it can be painful if you let it go too long.

I had a BSO with my hyst and started with menopausal symptoms within 24 hours. I was able to start on HRT right away, and the symptoms subsided within a week or two. I would suggest that you check out the Hormone Jungle for suggestions and feedback regarding the HRT alternatives you are trying, along with making sure your Dr. is aware.

Best wishes and s
