Radical Hysterctomy??

I was going thru Searches on the net and found a few
different descriptions, on the "radical" it showed that
everything including the vagina was gone? How can
that be? WOuld that mean absolutely no Sex for that
person? I know I'm having my uterus and ovaries
removed but don't know about cervix, doctor didn't
talk about that much but I'll ask him. from the
images I saw, the cervix took up half of the uterus..

Guess I should of paid more attention in biology

There are different extremes

Hi

Obviously there are different degrees of hysterectomies, ranging from loss of uterus only to what you describe. The more extreme surgeries are done as lifesaving measures, usually because of cancer.

I see you are having an LAVH. It is my understanging that the cervix cannot be left with that type of surgery. I'm not a doctor, so check it out, but that's my understanding of the surgery. You could do a search here or on the web and find lots of information if you're interested.

Whatever your situation, I wish you luck and a speedy recovery.

Radical Hysterctomy??

Hi TxLynn,

I had a radical hysterectomy due to being diagnosed with cervical cancer. With my surgery, my uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, top third of my vagina and lymph nodes from all the surrounding areas, including the tops of my legs were removed and all had pathology testing to check for cancer cells. Additionally, my bladder and bowels had tissue "shaved" off for the same reason.

I admit that I was intimidated at the thought of my surgery, but wanting to get rid of the cancer was the stronger force. I was also worried about what sex would be like after, and both my GYN and my ONC GYN assured me that the vagina is elastic and that I wouldn't notice any difference. And...I'm happy to say that I don't notice any difference and neither does my DH .

Best wishes and s
