Learned some things today..have a ? about hormones

Wow, first of all, the new on/gyn office I have been going to is great and even though I have not met the DR, I have been pleased with the staff I have seen and today , a Saturday, she calls to discuss my issues after reviewing my files! Now I am really impressed lol.
I was leaning toward NOT doing a hysterectomy, but she gave me some new insights.
She told me when you have fibroids you might continue to bleed after menopause! So much for that. I was disappointed to hear that news. I have at least 6 - 8 fibroids, my uterus is very large according to her and I have adenomyosis and a ovarian cyst, that is of no concern
And sometimes women have sudden bleeding that requires a trip to the ER. And since I have had breast cancer she would insist on removing my ovaries, well and I am 50, how much can they be helping me now??
Anybody have any idea what I could expect hormone wise if I did this at 50? Do you think I could be lucky enough to barely notice they are gone? I wish I wish I wish.
She is talking a laproscopic surgery, leaving the cervix. And as luck would have it I began my period today and feel crappy LOL, talk about timing !!! I am excited to try the Ponstel though.
Any feed back is greatly welcomed .

An early sister here who helped hack the paths through the jungle, Savh, had fibroids. She'd been persuaded to wait until menopause and yeap, menopause had no effect on her fibroids.

As for being 50, well, you'll likely have less of a problem, but there is a precipitous drop in levels that usually take about 10 years to drop to the same level naturally. So, there can be some problems with the transition. But there's no predicting really. I had an easy time (no hrt for the first 6 months) compared to my sister going through natural menopause. Someone else here in her 50s had a terrible time with hot flashes. It's a crap shoot.

Then there are the problems with not having hormones long term (vs the transition symptoms). Those you just have to deal with symptom by symptom really. There's a forum here where people share tips. Those seem to be pretty individual also.

It sounds like a terrific practice, and that's the best thing. The entirely lap procedure is absolutely the way to go if you can have it. Recovery is a fraction of the time of vaginal or abdominal or LAVH surgeries. I would ask (just to be sure) how many of these the surgeon has performed. That seems to be the source of complications from the lap--the skill of the surgeon with what's a relatively new technique.

Thanks Trish. This Dr has a website and I read that she has done over 600 of these lap hysterectomies, with only 1 slight bowel injury that was repaired on the spot, and 2 % infections, cleared up with medication.
One of the things the DR did not like was the fact that my last 6 periods have each been worse than the one before.
If I choose to wait or do nothing for now I return in 3 months for another ultra sound to check for any increase in size of the fibroids.
Today will be the big test for the Ponstel. The only negative I see so far is maybe water retention, I gained 5 pounds in 3 days, I usually LOSE 3 when I begin my period!

That's great news on the doctor's expertise.

Isn't Ponstel an NSAI? Is it supposed to help your fibroids or the bleeding?

Ponstel is supposed to help with the bleeding, many women find it cuts it in half.

HI. I am glad you are happy with your doctor, that doesn't happen very often I have a question. I was wondering why she would leave your cervix? I thought it was better to take it all out. I am still learning, so forgive me is this is a silly question. Jeanna

Well my DR says she leaves the cervix because she feels that is what helps keep everything in place and unless you have had problems it is better to keep it. I have never had a abnormal pap, so I guess there is no good reason to take it.

The Ponstel seems to be working, today should have been the worst day, I think it was about 60 % lighter than normal, as long as I took it every 6 hours, if it began to wear off it got worse and then a hour or 2 after I took it , it got better again.
