pre-op vitamins

I have read that a few sisters doctors have asked them to take supplements in the weeks prior to surgery. My doctor didn't mention this (I didn't think to ask) Should I be taking vitamins or stool softeners??

No, not without asking first. Some ladies are anemic and need iron supplements. Even vitamins like one-a-day or something similar, if you aren't taking them on a regular basis already, don't start without you DR's ok. And there are some supplements that you need to stop before surgery. Check the FYI at the top of this forum for more info on that.

If your DR wants you to do bowel prep you will be given that info at your pre op apt, which is usually a few days to a week before surgery. Sometimes it's at the hosp, sometimes at the DR's office. If you're not told to do bowel prep DON'T do it. Stool softeners are typically given in the hosp after surgery. Ask your DR if it's ok to take when you're home, if necessary.

Best wishes.

I would suggest asking your doctor. Many have diff suggestions. Some ladies do take stool softeners several days prior to surgery just to keep things going smothly...lol
And they also watch what htey eat. Some suggest adding more fiber to your diet, ect.
Ask doc about vitamins Prior and Post surgery. Also my doc didnt wont me taking ANYTHIN even over the counter meds prior to surgery. Say it does something to bloodcount, but I dont know if vitamins wouod hurt or not, Wouldnt think so...BUT please ask doc.

good luck
