S.A.R.S. - possibly cancelling my surgery

I'm from north of Toronto and we are under alert regarding SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome - pneumonia like symptoms). 4 people have died in the Toronto area and most of the hospitals are on alert. No visitors. 2 hospitals have completely shut down to visitors and new patients. One is near me, but the hospital I will be going to has had no cases YET!!! I am now more concerned that they will cancel than I have been regarding the surgery itself. Have any of you out there heard the news regarding this. This disease has been directly connected to one person coming from Hong Kong and bring it with them. There are now almost 100 cases (4 deaths).
I just hope I can get through this waiting and not knowing until Apr 7. (one more week)

Crossing Fingers

Hi,
Well I have my fingers crossed, I'm sorry you'll be waiting like this, on pins and needles. That's not a very comfortable place to be....

I'm also praying that the SARS will let up, it's an awfully scary thing that seems to spread so very easily...

Hang in there....

I can really sympathize with your worry about having your surgery cancelled. You get yourself all psyched up so that you are mentally ready, and boom, you have to start all over again.

I hope the disease is contained very soon, and I have my fingers crossed for you.

The thought has crossed my mind too, I'm in NS and I don't think they've had any cases here "yet". I also worry about getting in and having my surgery and then someone coming in the hospital with it and I won't be able to get out.

S.A.R.S. - possibly cancelling my surgery

I am just west of Toronto - Kitchener area and my surgery is in three weeks. I was just thinking the same thing.

SARS appears to be more widespread daily.

I guess all you can do is wait and see but I can certainly empathize - finally get it all arranged - the surgeon, the decision, time off work and dealing with it emotionally and a delay would be absolutely heart breaking.....and stressful.

Hope all goes well and best of luck.

SARS

Thanks all. I guess you are hearing about this all over the world. I wish I was there with you in Kissimmee. Disney World sounds great to me.
ValW - I think I heard that there was a confirmed case in Mirimachi NB over the weekend but nothing since. I want to call the Dr's office to see what's going on but I know that they will probably say we'll just have to wait & see. I just hope if it gets cancelled that they just bump everyone back and not put me at the end of the list. I agree we could get in there and end up being quarantined to the hospital.
Guess we'll just have to wait & see.

hi Nighthawk!

This is one of my fears as well. I'm in Victoria (other end of the Country). we haven't had any reported cases yet, but Vancouver has had a few.
its very scarey, I think more so because they don't seem to know for sure how its commuted.

I hope they don't have to cancel on you... fingers are crossed for you.

My feeling is always that the darned Media makes it sound much worse than it really it (sensationalism at its best!)

Me too...

I am in Toronto. I was supposed to have a TAH with Salpingo-Oophorectomy at St. Michael's Hospital. But there is a SARs case there and all elective surgery has been postponed until when I don't know.

My biopsy showed Endometrial Hyperlasia with Atypia and Dysplasia so I am worried. I want it out ASAP. I don't want cancer and I'm at high risk. So it's all very disappointing and I feel for you too.

We just have to ride it out. No other choice. I can't get any info out of the hospital or doctor's office. They probably know about as much as I do.

Keep your chin up and your head down.

Hey Liatris

When was your surgery scheduled for? I am next Monday 7th. I feel for you too. The thing I have been wondering is when they cancel, do they just push everyone back or do you end up at the end of the list? Newmarket hospital apparently cancelled elective surgeries yesterday, not sure, but does that mean they will go first when all is well or what. I'm not sure at this point what I want, but I guess to be fair they should go 1st. You seem to be closer to the situation than I am, it must be scary to even go to the mall or anything in the Toronto area. I think about it too, just going if I absolutely have to. Richmond Hill is about 1/2 hr away from me and is usually the hospital I would go to but my gyn is in Newmarket. Phew.
I hope we don't have to wait too long but think of those who need heart or cancer surgery. They must be very frightened too. Keep in touch and let me know if you hear anything new about your new date.

SARS

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. The news this morning indicated all elective procedures are cancelled across the province. My surgery isn't until May and I am worrying about what the situation will be then. I'm going to try to think positive. If everything elective is cancelled then they should be able to catch up quickly as it is usually availability of a bed following your procedure that causes the long waits and they should all be empty. Please keep us informed on your situation. You will be included in so many prayers the outcome has got to be good. Henri
