Conization and Hysterocopy

I am new to this site so please be patient...I am scheduled to have a Conization of the Cervix, a D & C and a Hysteroscopy in 4 days. My Gyn/OB and his nurse (both are absolutely wonderful) both say that I will not be in much pain at all. My Dr. said I could return to work within 4 to 5 days. Is this true? Is there that little pain involved? I just find that kind of hard to believe. I have had biopsies and D&C's at the same time and the pain was pretty bad.

My ordeal began back in late January, I began to bleed very badly and was passing clots the size of my fist. I called my GYNO and went to see him he gave me the usual 1st try....hormones (birth control pills) that didn't work...2nd try a different hormone....3rd try an internal ultrasound (oh was that pleasant). At that time he found a spot on my Cervix that concerned him. He gave me a different type medication to try and stop the bleeding so he could do a biopsy and a pap. He did the pap first then when it came back abnormal he brought me in to do the biopsy (I was bleeding again at that time of course) He went in to do the biopsy and found another spot. The pap showed mild dysplasia but the biopsies showed Carcinoma In Situ. So here we go....Surgery OUCH!! I have only had surgery once...tubaligation. I am petrified. Any advice as to what to expect would be greatly appreciated.

I really appreciate this site and all who participate...I have learned a lot already by reading some of the messages.

Conization and Hysterocopy

Hi KDavis,

I put some links about hysteroscopy below in case you want to check them out, I've never had one so I can't comment on that. As for the cone biopsy though, I've had two of them done. Both times they were done on Fridays (one in the AM and once in the PM) and I was back at work Monday morning with little discomfort. For me, the worst part about the cone was the first period that I had afterward, it was quite painful! Anyway, I was put under general anesthesia for the cone biopsies and was home on both occasions within about 4 hours of arriving at the hospital. The doc gave me some painkillers that were needed for the first two days.

Also, I want to suggest that you get an appointment with a gyn/oncologist if you can. They are the experts in this field, and you want to make sure that you get the best possible care. It's not that you're gyn isn't great, it's just that the gyn/oncs see this stuff all the time and are perhaps more prepared to give you a thorough going-over!

Not A Big Deal

First let me say that everyone is different. I have had your exact proceedure on three different occassions. It is a rather quick proceedure, generally under general anesthesia and you are home within about 4 hours.

My last one was October 2001. I had no pain at all with any of the proceedures and very very minimal bleeding after the proceedure.

At my six month check up March 2002 my test results returned with cervical cancer. Darn, just didn't seem to be able to stay away from that doctor!

I was scheduled for a TVH within three weeks. I entered the hospital one morning had the surgery and came home the following afternoon. No pain, no problems and I can honestly say I have never felt better in my life. Returned to work in 5 weeks (of course I have an office job) and have never looked back.

I just had my annual check up and am currently awaiting results.

My best to you and just remember to take care of you at all costs!
