Read a scary, scary book

I ordered a book about hyst, it was supposed to be real women's experiences, etc. I thought it would be supportive, like this website. It turned out to be a terrible piece of anti-hyst propaganda. Every story an absolute nightmare, etc. Now I'm uneasy, disturbed ,and upset. The only thing that gives me pause is it seems the worst horror stories were written by some very strange, rage filled individuals. I would tell the name of the book but have vague worries of legal action. This book made it seem as if every woman who had to have a hyst was 'snorfledoodled' or 'taken advantage of by her doctor'. This is not the feeling I get from this site at all. To me, most women here seem to feel their hyst was the right decision. I know I feel that its' the only option for me. Am I stupid to be bothered by the Scary Book?

Read a scary, scary book

You are not at all wrong in being bugged by this book. The last thing anything needs is "horror stories" right before major surgery!

What ***** is that the author focused on only the bad stories out there, thus not offering the reader varying opinions. Not to mention that the author clearly did not think of the readers feelings and thoughts about this book. Usually when a woman is having a hystorectomy, it is a last resort for her. And most women like to do a bit of reading up on what they are about to undertake. What a way to make a woman feel completely helpless, and scared out of her mind before something major! GEEZ!!

I am looking for a good book on Hysts. If you'd like, please message me the name of the book, so I can be sure to stear clear of that one!

Read a scary, scary book

I have a feeling that women who are angry about their hysterectomies were either angry in the first place or did not make a wise decision regarding hysterectomy. My hysterectomy saved my life and I am grateful for that. I did not have a hysterectomy earlier, even though I was advised by a number of doctors who seemed to me to be the 'you don't need it any more so why not take it out' type because I didn't think there was a good enough reason. If I had had one before I was ready I might have been one of those angry women who tell horror stories. As long as you are sure of what you are doing you are not going to be angry or sorry after the fact, IMHO. As far as the bad stuff - that's a very small minority. Any surgery has its risks but if it's really needed it's worth the risks, which are really very small.

Read a scary, scary book

{{{{{Lynda}}}}}

It seems to me that scary book had an agenda. It would be my bet that it was published under the authority of an anti-hysterectomy group (and there are some out there - web sites too).

What I suggest to you is to consider the source. Whenever something is said or done that disturbs you, consider the source.

I am very glad you are here at Hyster Sisters. We will support YOU, regardless of your decision, as you go through this. This web site is unique in that it neither tells you to have a hyst or to not have a hyst. It's a VERY personal decision and all of the stories from the women experiencing it here are in the message boards and in the chat room and on the Sisters Tell Their Hyst-Stories.

Always remember that Everyone Is Different. Consider the agenda of that scary book and try not to be bothered by it, although I know that is difficult. Continue to research and read here, come to chat during chat room hours and talk live to ladies who are going through it and have been through it.

I'm sorry you went through that Lynda. I hope you feel better about everything as you get to know this site.

Read a scary, scary book

I read a book, the title of which should have clued me in to begin with..it was something about hyst being the "ultimate r a p . e" (without the spaces/period - I know the filter on here is a little sensitive ). Now apparently the same author has written another, more objective book that does include positive case histories too - but I haven't read that one yet.

After reading the first one though, I felt insulted and degraded, as if I didn't know what I was doing by having this surgery. The book actually implied that women who DO choose hyst are nothing more than clueless sheep who aren't intelligent enough to figure things out for themselves!!!

Basically, for every bad experience with hyst out there, I'll bet there are many, many more positive experiences. And it's been said so many times, but we tend to hear about the negatives much more than the positives, if only because the folk with a good experience tend to move along with life and forget about their surgery!

I had a VERY positive experience - for me, it was about getting my life back :-)

s and blessings,

Tess
