"From time to time I'm asked why we run fundraisers asking members for voluntary subscriptions and how the money is used.
Hyster Sisters Financial Support
This page might help explain that the owner of this site is a public school teacher by day and keeps this site going by evening and summers. She's spent her own money to keep this place going all this time (since 1998) with a little help over the past few years from amazon.com and other advertising. In the past two+ we have finally gotten to a point where the site pays for itself..from the Crown Jewels membership and whatever profit there might be, goes back into tech support, upgrades for software on the server and increased traffic.
All hostesses are volunteers on the website. Tech support is by hire, contracted by the job. We have one contracted tech support that watches over the server monthly, making sure our server is secured, safe and backed up. We hire others as the need arises for everything from software upgrades to coding help on the message boards. (like the main page integration we recently did.)
This site is not a "non-profit" organization because of an early decision with the owner's attorney as the name of "Hyster Sisters" was trademarked for the book and the site. The goal was never to build a big site, but to offer hyst support online.
From a free hosting site in 1998 to its current location on two dedicated servers co-located at a data center in Dallas, Texas, this server costs on a monthly average between $1,800 - $5,000 per month in fees, traffic costs, tech support and sometimes more than this...depending on the server's needs.
Why so much? We are a big site. At the end of the first year, HysterSisters was receiving about 100 unique visitors per day. Now we receive between 8,500 and 11,000 unique visitors per day who stay and access many of our content pages and enjoy support on the website. Traffic costs money. Upkeep costs money.
The costs are maintained by the site's owner who works daily with a great group of volunteer hostesses to make sure the members and guests find a kind online community for hysterectomy decisions and support.
Who is this owner? She is the keeper of the keys to the website of Hystersisters.com and that would be me. :D
