Abdominal Hysterectomy Stories

An abdominal hysterectomy is abdominal surgery for the removal of the uterus. If your doctor has mentioned an abdominal hysterectomy, a horizontal incision or vertical incision will be made in the abdomen.

TAH - Six Weeks Post-Op
Submitted by Mohrgold

Thank you Hyster Sisters for all the wealth of information on this site! I was originally scheduled for a laproscopic hysterectomy on December 21, 2011 due to excessive bleeding, 30 + days of bleeding, endometriosis, and lower back pain. During my surgery, my doctor found that I had a bicornate uterus that was totally split in half and tilted. In addition, there was a band of tissue that was attached to the uterus, bowel, and bladder. My surgeon had no choice to do a total abdominal hysterectomy. My surgery lasted four hours with a urologist repairing my bladder and a general surgeon removing the band of tissue from my bowel.
The first two days in the hospital were pure hell. I became sick from the morphine, running a fever, a lot of pain, and could not tolerate any food. I spent my Christmas in the hospital which was depressing.
On January 5th, I started to bleed and was soaking through a pad an hour. Thanks to all the people that posted about bleeding and when to call the doctor. I called my doctor and was instructed to go to the hospital. The hospital was of no help and blamed it on menstral cramps! I showed the doctor my incision and asked him to notify my doctor, which he did not. I was released to the hospital and went immediately to my doctor's office for treatment. I had a blood clot that was putting pressure on my vaginal cuff. I was treated by my doctor and instructed to stay in bed.
Today, I went for my 6 week checkup. My doctor was totally amazed on my recovery. My vaginal cuff was healed, minimal belly swelling, blood pressure back to normal, iron level normal, and my energy has returned! I was released to slowly get back into a normal activities. I was also instructed to listen to my body and not over due it.

LAVH 1-30-12 already have relief!
Submitted by UntoTheLeast

I have always had very painful, heavy periods. I had taken birth control for years to help control symptoms. Which helped for awhile! But after going to Africa to minister to orphans in two countries, it came with a vegence. My period lasted 5 weeks, blood clots larger than ever before. Everything the Dr was trying wasn't helping and every test came with more and more problems. For me, planning to move to a third world country has to be in my decision making. I knew i cant return, anemic and constant pain. I had 3 options after months of trying everything. 1. Do nothing and continue with iron infusions and on heavy pain killers. 2. Ablation (but the issues could return) 3. Hysterectomy. I leaped at that option.

I had a month to wait for surgery, which was very emotional. I was facing the finality of it all. But I was desperate for relief and yearning for Africa.

I was so blessed as my cloesest friend, surprised me and flew in from California to be by my side. Saturday morning i was so nervous, but after she showed up i couldn't stop smiling! It really helped to distract me from surgery on Monday. I really needed that. Sunday i had to fast, then cut off clear liquids as well at 10PM. I was very shacky being anemic already. The bowel prep wasn't so bad! I think fasting helped that.k the Dulcolax 5pm. At 7:30 i had about an hour on the loo. But that was really it!

Monday morning I arrived at the castle with my mom and friend. I went to the front desk, signed some papers, and got my lovely jewlrey (hospital bracelet). Then i was sent right up to the maternity ward. They showed me to my room, and i was relieved to have a private room! I changed into my gown. The nurse started my IV, and i was able to get things where i wanted it when i got back to my room. My pastor came and shortly after my Dr came in. My Dr is great and answered all their questions (i already asked him my three pages of questions at my pre op appointment!) He assured me he would do everything to do it LAVH. Then the anisestia guy came in, and asked if my pressed pillow pet was for him. He had a great sense of humor. I was getting really nervous and shacky at this point so that funny anistesia guy gave me a valuim. He was ever funnier after that.

About twenty mins later it was time to go. They rolled me into the OR. Once i got in there, i scooted off my bed and onto the OR table. I was glad i took the valium, the OR wasn't as scary looking. They asked me the same questions, name, bday, and why i was there. Then i was out!

I woke up in recovery and remember moaning and breathing in a way to control my pain. The nurse asked me rate it, which i told her 8. She put some mess in my IV. I could feel my body waking up. It took some effort to start moving my arms and legs. The anestesia didn't make me nautilus, but itchy. Esp my nose. She asked me again to rate my pain, 6. So she gave me another dose. My pain then was maybe a 3. At most a 3. So then i just talked to her, about her cute valentines day scrubs. She kept telling me how awesome all my vitals where.

So they took me back to my room. Where my mom and Cindi were waiting. I was so glad to see their smiling faces! Then i slept again. Actually all three of us napped awhile. (We had to leave at 5am, and Cindi jet lagged!)

I had a cath in till 8pm. Oh and when i got back to my room, my mom had the milk shake i said i was craving waiting for me! The only time my pain got over 5, is when i didn't say anything and tried to wait it out. DONT! Don't try and be the strong women. They say you heal slower if your in pain slot. So tell them honestly when your in pain! I even had a steak dinner with my friends that night.

I had a hard time pee'ing though. I didn't pee on my own till 9AM on Tuesday. But since then, i have been pee'ing.

Now I'm trying to let my friends spoil me. I am recovering at home by myself, but have friends stop over twice a day to do what i cant and bring meals. I'm sleeping a lot and i only have pain when i again hold off to long to take pain meds. Still needing percocet.

I have had maybe 3 spots of blood since surgery. And that's my story. The pain is different than before, more manageable and in all I'm already feeling better in do many ways than i did pre op!

Tina

January 20, 2012 I left for my 7:30am LSH procedure. I arrived at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte at 5am with my mother and aunt in tow. I left my overnight bag in my car just in case. I went in and was greeted by the wonderful greeters at CMC Main. I then went to the 5th floor where my family was given instruections about seeing my progress on the flat screen TV. (how cool). I left with three other men who of course were not getting what I was getting done. Believe it or not I was not scared as they were. I emptied my bladder and was taken into a bed and given a special gown for ob/gyn patients. It had a built in air conditioner and heat...another cool thing. My nurse was very nice we shared conversation about our children both of who are graduting this year. I was given an IV in my right hand and I answered a series of questions all over again. I met with the anethesiologist and he explained what anethesis I would receive...General, which meant I would be alseep during the while procedure.. My Dr <> Ob/Gyn came in and met my family who were able to sit with me for the last 20 minutes or so before my procedure. I was then given a relaxer in my IV and rolled down the hall towards the operating room. I was told that depending on scarred tissue from my previous c-sections would determine the need to be cut again in the same area. I remember going into a room with lots of equipment and a big light overhead. I asked my doctor if he could take pictures? He asked of what, in the room or the uterus? I said both. A mask went over my face and when I woke up I heard someone calling my name. I woke up and said Thank You Jesus, Hallelujah. She asked me what day it was and what my name was I replied. I sat up and experience a lot of belching due to the air they put in me, I was told this in the beginning. My thought was dry and scratchy from the breathing tube. I had no pain. Was able to walk to the restroom, urinate, came back to sit in a chair and come home 2 hours after the procedure. It has been 1 week and 4 days. I stopped taking the strong pills two days after surgery and took Ibuprofren 600 mg for two days and have not needed any meds since. No pain. A little draining which I was told a clear liquid may discharge from me. I bled for 2 days only spotting and today is the day I would have started my period. This was a great option. The prodedure went better that expected, no blood and I am healing up great. I have to remember I am healing from the inside out and not try to do to much. For those that are getting ready to experience it. Have a positive attitude, prayer changes things. My nurse told me it makes a great difference for recovery. I spoke my healing in advance and here I am to talk about it.

Ovary-sparing daVinci Hysterectomy, A&P Repair, and Bladder Neck Sling
Submitted by Charlie*D

I was having painful cramps and heavy bleeding during my periods and it steadily got worse over about three months. I also had lower back and hip pain. My GYN confirmed on December 21, 2011 that I had a 5cm fibroid, prolapsed uterus, and a cystocele. He recommended the daVinci Hysterectomy with Anterior Repair and a bladder sling.

I was in shock. I thought this was an "old lady" issue and that I would many more years before I would have to deal with something like this. After talking with some friends, I found out how common it really is. I had no idea. Why don't people talk about this??? Ever since then, I've been putting practically every detail on Facebook. My guy friends hate it, but I just hope I can help someone else understand the process. I'm a teacher anyway... go figure!

So my surgery was scheduled for January 17, 2012. That way I could finish up semester exams and get grades finalized before I took off. It also gave me one more period... I guess so I could "remember". I don't know. I just felt weird about it.

My initial impression of the hospital is pretty negative, but I received excellent care during my surgery and post-op. There were a few things that made me unhappy right at the beginning.

I arrived at the surgery center at 5:30 am. All the surgery patients were led into a de-dressing station together in groups. I didn't like that. I felt like cattle or something. It just seemed impersonal.

Then I was led into the Pre-Op area where my RN did my H&P and started my IV. I made it abundantly clear that I have anxiety issues and to please give me something, but that never happened. About 30 minutes later, the anesthesiologist and the scrub nurse came to take me to the OR.

I was half blind because I couldn't have my contacts or glasses. I just remember looking up and the blurry ceiling from my gurney and crying. They wheeled me into the surgical suite where the daVinci robot loomed in the corner. That really freaked my freak and I put my hands over my face and just laid there and cried some more. I had to move myself over to the surgical table. As soon as I laid my head on the pillow, I was out. Good thing. I was really scared.

The next thing I remember was being lifted from a gurney into my hospital bed. I remember thinking how soft and fluffy the bed felt. Drugs sure are a good thing, huh? My husband and mother came in the room shortly after. The nurse informed me that I had to have a posterior repair in addition to everything else. So I pretty much got a brand new hoo-haw.

The first 12 hours post, I pretty much chatted and napped. I was asked if I wanted 1 or 2 Percocet for my first opportunity for pain meds. Still having a Versed hangover, I decided 1 was plenty. Always get the second pill. Two hours later I was pretty achy and the dragon lady from Hell wouldn't let me have another until the 4 hours were up. It was bearable though. The pain never really got all that bad. The only thing that I worried about a little was when my blood pressure machine alarmed when my BP got too low. At one point it was like 95/45 or something like that. I just had to lay on my back instead of my side and it bounced back up to a decent level. (I take a Beta-blocker.)

I stayed in the surgical center overnight for "observation". Clever how they do that to trick the insurance company into paying for an in-patient stay for an out-patient copay. My night was uncomfortable though. I had to get up and walk around 8:00 that evening. It made me pretty achy again. So, I took the TWO Percocet before I went to bed and woke up really itchy a couple of hours later. It eventually wore off and I got a little bit of sleep in between shift changes and taking my vitals.

The next morning at 6:00, the nurse removed the Foley catheter and my gauze packing. Then I showered and checked out all my new holes and fancy cardiac lead stickers. (Baby oil is your friend for removing the residue.) My doctor came by around 9:00 and I was on my way home by 10:30.

I was sent home with a Rx for Percocet 7.5/325 for pain and Flexeril 10mg for bladder spasms.

Hystersisters has helped me get through this on a daily basis. I didn't even know the site existed until I Google searched a couple of items and the forums kept popping up. What an enormous wealth of knowledge and support! And it's not all in medicalese that you can't understand. It's written in plain language by women who have been through it. I especially like how EVERYTHING is discussed. There are no taboo topics. So, as you go through the healing process and new questions arise, there is somebody somewhere who has gone through pretty much what you are going through.

And that's my story.
