Medications, Vitamins, and Supplements before Hysterectomy

From the Pre-Op Hysterectomy Articles List

Medications, vitamins and supplementsMy hysterectomy is coming up soon, and I've been taking my One A Day vitamins and ibuprofen for my back pain. Am I not supposed to do this? Should I tell doctor about this? Will he change my surgery date?

You should tell your doctor immediately about all medications, vitamins, and supplements you have been taking, even ones you consider to be natural. Several of them can cause life threatening issues when taken prior to hysterectomy surgery.

Medications, vitamins, and supplements taken in the days leading to surgery can be harmful in a number of ways. In some cases, they interfere with anesthesia. Others prevent the blood from clotting properly and can lead to bleeding issues during and after surgery. Some of them could interact with the medications given during and after surgery. There are other risks factors, too, depending on what you are taking.

You need to give your surgeon a list of all medications, vitamins, and supplements that you are taking so he can tell you when to stop them prior to surgery. Consequences can be fatal, so be open and honest with your surgeon about everything you are taking. Your surgeon will be able to let you know if it is safe to proceed with your current date or not. Rather than worry, just talk to your doctor so you will know what is best for you.
