SHARING IS CARING

3 months behind me and I'm doing GREAT

From the Abdominal Hysterectomy Stories Articles List

Where do I start. First - a HUGE THANK YOU to Hystersisters, the site, the advice, the support, it was all amazing, and I know it made this experience so much easier for me. Second - a big apology to all for taking such a long time to check-back in. My story; I was lucky, no pain or discomfort to really worry about, but my fibroids were outgrowing my uterus and beginning to put too much pressure on my kidneys, and would eventually seek out other organs to bother as well. So after changing doctors (4 years of "let's wait til it becomes a problem"), my new doctor said - this needs taken care of NOW. I was set on the DaVinci; because of the size and number of my fibroids my dr recommeded against. Not what I wanted to hear. But I had a fantastic dr and he explained every option I had and once again gave me his recommendation, and then said -it's your body, your choice. Well, he is the dr. So I went with his recommendation. That's not to say I didn't sway for the next 2 weeks as to which procedure to have and where. But my dr welcomed my calls and questions, and I finally decided to go with TAH. This was my first ever surgery so I was a nervous wreck. Hystersisters gave me so much wonderful information to prepare, and my insurance company also had an advocate that called twice before surgery to ask and answer questions. I had my surgery first thing on a Monday morning and went home Wednesday evening. I'm very lucky; recovery was very easy. After the first few days, the only pain I had was getting in and out of bed, and when I laughed. I was lucky to have my sister here for 2 weeks after surgery, and she kept me laughing, which is a good thing - but did it ever hurt at the time. I had 6 weeks off from work, and felt like I could have gone back sooner, but once the meds wore off and I was getting around, I realized why you have 6 weeks. I actually took 4 weeks off, and then worked from home for 4 weeks. Being able to work from home allowed me to take breaks and rest when I got to that point, and then work for a couple hours more. I had no post op problems, no bleeding, nothing. My doctor could not believe I was walking around (COSTCO no less), and getting out a week after surgery. I had all these preconceptions of being in bed for weeks, not being able to do anything at all but watch tv, but none of that happened with me. I realize this is not the case with everyone, so I truely feel blessed that this was such an easy and non-eventful experience for me. And I really have to thank my dr, who referred me to Hystersisters, Hystersisters (those lists really helped me ask the right questions and while the entire prelude was overwhelming, Hystersisters definitely prepared me for everything), and of course my family, especially my sister for taking such wonderful care of me. I wish everyone who goes through this experience a speedy and non-eventful recovery as well. Thank you...
