Waiting for Hysterectomy Surgery | Pain

From the Pre-Op Hysterectomy Articles List

Waiting with pain before hysterectomy I have my date and now the wait is killing me! I'm extremely anxious and I'm in a lot of pain. What should I do?

Many women struggle with the waiting time leading up to their hysterectomy, especially if the wait involves physical pain. Fortunately, there are plenty of remedies that can help.

First and foremost, if you are in pain, be sure to consult your doctor. Some women find relief in over-the-counter medications (OTC) like Tylenol, but many find they need something stronger. Because of surgery risks, check with your doctor before taking any medications or supplements within two weeks of surgery. Many HysterSisters also suggest a heating pad to help relieve the pain.

Constipation, a side-effect of pain medicine, is another common problem. Many women find relief from constipation by drinking plenty of water and eating a high-fiber diet. Foods like prunes (or prune juice), oatmeal, and applesauce are known to help. OTC fiber supplements, like Metamucil, and stool softeners, like Miralax, can also help. As always, be sure to ask your doctor for if you have severe constipation.
