Laparoscopic vs. Robotic | Which Hysterectomy Is Safer?
From the Surgery Options and Choices Articles List
I have heard that the laparoscopic hysterectomy is safer than robotic, but my surgeon recommends the robotic method. Which should I choose?
Generally speaking, both of these surgeries are equally safe. Of course, there is always a risk in any surgery, but there is no clear evidence that one of these methods runs a higher risk than the other. These are both very common methods, and there are many women who have had successful operations with either type.
The real question when choosing between the two is which one your
doctor is more experienced with. Here are some questions to ask your surgeon:
- How many surgeries have you done with this method?
- How were you trained in this surgical technique?
- What is your complication rate and what have the complications been?
- How many times have you had to convert from a minimally invasive to an abdominal procedure? Why?
The skill of your surgeon is the main determining factor in the safety of your procedure. If you are not satisfied with your surgeon's ratings, you owe it to yourself to seek out another surgeon who can better guarantee a safe procedure.
