Testing and Diagnosis for Fibroids

From the Uterine Fibroids Articles List

Understanding tests for fibroidsDuring my recent pelvic exam, my doctor discovered I have some fibroids. She said he wants to run additional tests. What kind of tests would I need?

Uterine fibroids are frequently found during a routine pelvic exam. Your doctor may feel irregularities in the shape of your uterus, suggesting the presence of fibroids. There are also a variety of tests that can be done for diagnostic purposes.

If your doctor needs confirmation, your doctor may use an ultrasound, which provides a clear picture of your uterus, to confirm the diagnosis of uterine fibroids. Your doctor may use a transabdominal ultrasound (over the belly) or a transvaginal ultrasound (placed inside the vagina) to map the area of your uterus affected by fibroids.

If your doctor needs more information, your doctor may order other images:
  • Hysterosonography: uses saline to expand the uterine cavity for ease in imaging.
  • Hysterosalpingography: uses dye to highlight the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes on x-ray images.
  • Hysteroscopy: inserts a small, lighted telescope through your cervix into your uterus and can be performed in the doctor's office. Saline is injected into the uterus to expand it, allowing the doctor the ability to examine the walls of the uterus and fallopian tubes.

Your doctor may also check your blood counts to determine if you are experiencing anemia from chronic blood loss. Your doctor may also order other blood tests to rule out blood disorders and to check hormone levels.

Ask your doctor about any additional diagnostic tests you are concerned about.
