Hot Flashes | Brisdelle

From the Menopause and Hormones Articles List

Is Brisdelle™an effective alternative for treating hot flashes? What is Brisdelle™? Is it an effective alternative for treating hot flashes without hormone replacement therapy?

Many women are unable to use any type of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for a wide variety of reasons. These can include cancer concerns, blood clot issues, or a hormonal dependent diagnosis such as endometriosis. Some women who could use HRT still choose not to as a personal preference. As a result, managing menopausal symptoms can be frustrating, especially when it comes to hot flashes.

Fortunately, a new option is on the horizon. In February of 2013, HysterSisters.com asked members to complete a personal hot flash survey. The results were compiled and reported at the FDA Advisory Council for Brisdelle™. This made the FDA aware of the interest in a non-HRT prescription drug that could be used in the treatment of hot flashes. The FDA has recently approved the first, non-hormonal treatment therapy prescription for menopausal hot flashes. This new medication, developed by Noven Therapeutics, LLC, could be available in pharmacies as early as November 2013.

Brisdelle™, a low dose of 7.5 mg of paroxetine as a mesylate salt, is a new prescription medication which has been developed specifically to reduce hot flashes caused by menopause. The development of this medication came about after doctors noticed that breast cancer patients who were using various antidepressants were experiencing fewer hot flashes. When studies of paroxetine were conducted, the results indicated that this medication was effective in treating hot flashes in menopausal women.

To date, women have only been able to use paroxetine in higher doses if their doctors were willing to prescribe Paxil, an antidepressant, off-label. Brisdelle™ will be a new, lower dose form that reduces hot flashes and produces fewer side-effects. This can allow more women to use this medication for the treatment of hot flashes. Having a medication developed specifically for hot flashes also makes it easier for physicians to prescribe this option to their patients.

As with any new medication, talk to your doctor about whether or not this drug is right for you. Certain health conditions and medications may prevent the use of Brisdelle™. You and your health provider will need to weigh the benefits and risks of this medication to determine if it is right for you.
