Vaginal Cuff Cellulitis after Hysterectomy

From the Hysterectomy Recovery Articles List

Vaginal Cuff Cellulitis after HysterectomyHas anyone had vaginal cuff cellulitis? I understand that it is an infection, but I do not know anything more than that. What do I need to know?

Vaginal cuff cellulitis is a common complication following a complete hysterectomy. Cellulitis occurs when bacteria, usually strep or staph, reaches the deeper layer of skin. It can occur where there is a break in the skin, including the site of an incision or wound from surgery. Following a hysterectomy, this type of infection can occur along the vaginal cuff which is created when the complete uterus, with cervix, has been removed.

Symptoms of vaginal cuff cellulitis usually occur within days of surgery. The symptoms can include fever, pelvic pain, abdominal pain, vaginal discharge, and tenderness in the vaginal cuff. Vaginal cuff cellulitis may be diagnosed after a swab of the vaginal cuff or following a blood test that shows an elevated white blood cell count. Your doctor may also order various other tests to rule out other possibilities for your symptoms.

Once cellulitis has been confirmed, antibiotics are prescribed. Depending on your situation, you may be given a prescription for oral antibiotics, or you may be hospitalized so you can receive IV antibiotics. At times, vaginal medications may also be given. Your doctor may prescribe pain medications as well to help manage your pain.

Cellulitis is a serious health issue, so follow all of your doctor’s orders. This includes finishing all of your antibiotics, even if/when you start to feel better. You should also rest and drink plenty of water while you are recovering. If your symptoms do not improve within a couple days after starting treatment, let your doctor know.
