Uterine Sarcoma | What Are the Risk Factors for Uterine Sarcoma?

From the GYN Cancer Articles List

What are the risk factors for uterine sarcoma? What are the risk factors for uterine sarcoma?

There are only a few known risk factors for sarcoma. Having these risk factors does not mean you will definitely develop uterine sarcoma, and not having these risk factors does not mean you will not develop uterine sarcoma.

PELVIC RADIATION THERAPY

Women who have previously undergone pelvic radiation therapy for cancer have a higher risk of developing a second cancer, including uterine sarcoma.

TAMOXIFEN

Women who have used tamoxifen for breast cancer treatment may be at greater risk for uterine sarcoma. If you are using this drug, be sure to have a yearly pelvic exam and immediately report any non-menstrual vaginal bleeding to their physician.

RACE

For reasons unknown, African-American women are twice as likely to have uterine sarcoma as white or Asian women.

RB GENE CHANGE

Women who have an abnormal copy of the RB gene that causes retinoblastoma, a type of eye cancer, have an increased risk of developing uterine leiomyosarcoma.

At this time, there are no other known risk factors for uterine sarcoma, and it is not known if there is a hereditary factor. What causes uterine sarcoma is also unknown. Women diagnosed with uterine sarcoma do tend to be younger than those diagnosed with other uterine cancers.

As with any other health issue, it is wise to consult with a physician who is knowledgeable regarding your concerns. You should also strive to be as healthy as possible by limiting alcohol, stopping smoking, avoiding recreational drugs, practicing safe sex, getting regular exercise, eating well, managing stress, getting adequate sleep, and having yearly well woman exams.
