Anesthesia | What if My Hysterectomy Is Converted from Laparoscopic to Abdominal?

From the Pre-Op Hysterectomy Articles List

Anesthesia During HysterectomyI am scheduled for a laparoscopic hysterectomy. If my surgery has to be converted to an abdominal hysterectomy, how will that affect the anesthesia management?

There should be little, if any, change in the anesthesia plan if your surgery is converted from a laparoscopic to an abdominal hysterectomy. Both of these types of hysterectomy require general anesthesia with an endotracheal (breathing) tube along with muscle relaxation.

The main difference between the two types of hysterectomy is the pain. You are likely to experience more pain with the abdominal hysterectomy, so more pain medicine will probably be necessary during and after that type of surgery.

If you have specific questions about the possibility of your hysterectomy type changing during surgery, be sure to discuss them with your surgeon and anesthesiologist before going into the operating room.
