Anesthesia | What Happens if My Hysterectomy Is Longer than Planned?

From the Pre-Op Hysterectomy Articles List

Anesthesia during HysterectomyWill anesthesia change if my hysterectomy turns out to be more complicated than my surgeon expects?

Though potential complications during a hysterectomy sound unsettling to the patient, they are all part of a day's work to the people in the scrubs. Your anesthesiologist has been in numerous surgeries, so he or she will be able to adjust easily to any changes in the original plan for your hysterectomy.

During your hysterectomy, your anesthesiologist will be monitoring you constantly. He will be able to judge the depth and adequacy of the anesthesia so he can deepen, lighten, maintain, or change things at any time the need should arise. If necessary, muscle relaxants can be added even if they were not originally planned.

If there is a need to change the type of breathing tube used, that can be done as well. Your anesthesiologist can switch from a laryngeal mask airway (LMA) breathing tube that sits in the back of the mouth to an endotracheal tube which goes down the trachea.

The biggest change for you could involve pain and pain medications. A longer, more complicated procedure could require the use of more pain medications both during and after the surgery.

If your hysterectomy becomes more complicated than originally planned, it should not pose problems for the anesthesiologist. He should be able to adequately manage your situation and keep you safe and comfortable despite the change in plans.
