Uterine CancerWhat is uterine cancer?

Uterine cancer is cancer that occurs in any part of the uterus except the cervix. The most common type of uterine cancer begins in the endometrium, but uterine cancer can also begin in the muscular layer and connective tissues of the uterus.

Endometrial cancer, the most common type of uterine cancer, begins in the endometrium which is the lining of the uterus. This type of cancer often causes vaginal bleeding which can prompt women to seek medical attention. When detected and treated early, a hysterectomy can cure this type of cancer.

Uterine sarcoma is uterine cancer that begins in the muscular layer or connective tissues of the uterus. Diagnosis of this type of cancer can be more difficult as symptoms can mimic other conditions and symptoms often do not begin until the sarcoma has reached a more advanced stage. Prognosis depends on the type, stage, and location of the uterine sarcoma, but the earlier it is detected the more positive the outcome can be.

If you suspect you have uterine cancer or you have family members who have been diagnosed with uterine cancer, consulting with a gynecologic oncologist would be beneficial. A gynecologic oncologist is the best type of physician to diagnose and treat gynecologic cancer, and a genetic counselor can help you work through any genetic risk factors. It can also be helpful to seek a second opinion regarding the options and treatments which might be available for you.
